In her TedTalk, “The Game That Can Give You Ten Extra Years of Life” Jane McGonigal explains how she created a game called “Jane the Concussion Slayer” to help her overcome a concussion that didn’t heal properly. McGonigal describes to her audience the different levels and power-ups she created to cope with the aftermath of her unhealed concussion that left symptoms like headaches, nausea, vertigo, memory loss, and mental fog. In addition to this, McGonigal had to avoid everything that triggered her symptoms such as: writing, video games, work, emails, exercise, alcohol, etc. In doing so, she believed the game she created helped her tackle these symptoms with more creativity, determination, and optimism. Since McGonigal is gamer, she convinces her audience that playing games can help one cope through tough times by sharing to the audience the game she created for her concussion. In the game she adopted a secret identity, recruited allies, battled bad guys, and activated power-ups. While playing this game, in just a few days McGonigal noticed that she vanquished the fog of depression and anxiety. (McGonigal 8:21 – 8:53). She then interacts with her audience by making them play and successfully complete the first four SuperBetter quests. SuperBetter quests are simple games that can help an individual achieve the three-to-one positive emotion ratio such as snapping your fingers and raising your fists over your head. Those three missions are: attending all classes, finishing the appropriate homework that is due, and building a connection/network with one new person every day. Attending all classes is an important mission because new material is being taught every day and it is a good habit to be present in class because you will gain a better connection with not only your peers but also your professor. Attending class daily is an important factor in how one will approach their homework. For example, if you attend class every day, you will have a better understanding of what is expected and when things are due. Whereas, if you were to skip class regularly, you wouldn’t know what is expected and lack of effort is shown to not only to your professors but also your peers; causing them to disassociate with you. Building a network with people from different backgrounds is one of the game’s top three daily missions because it can help me in the long run, in terms of career and personal needs. McGonigal expresses her amazement to the reaction of her readers and their responses to her game. She received messages and videos telling her how playing a life game has changed their lives for the better (McGonigal 9:41 – 10:23). That being said, I believe setting those three things as my top missions are a great way to achieve the three-to-one positive emotion

Did you know, that someone suffers from a brain injury every 21 seconds (Haas)? Children get concussions all the time, and most of the time they go unnoticed. The majority of concussions happen when one is playing a sport such as football, hockey, or lacrosse. Many famous athletes have had their careers, even their lives cut short due to concussions. Brain damage and death can result from serial concussions (Schafer). When one suffers from a concussion, one’s brain needs time to recover physically and mentally. Between 2002 and 2006, statistics showed that 52,000 people died from concussions and about 275,000 were hospitalized (Fundukian). Everyone’s recovery process is different (“Injury and Pain Care”). Although concussions seem minor, they are very serious brain injuries that may result in severe damage to one’s brain.
Specific Purpose: My audience will understand the dangers of concussions, know the symptoms and be educated on ways to prevent concussions.
Specific Purpose: My specific purpose is to convince my audience what needs to be done to decrease the number of concussions in football.
The National Football League (NFL) has a concussion problem. Of course, many believe they’ve known that for quite some time. That hasn’t changed the fact that football is America’s favorite pastime (sorry baseball) – and dominates the airwaves each and every Sunday while the season is in session.
Through sports or through everyday life, concussions tend to happen. An estimated 300 000 sport-related traumatic brain injuries, predominantly concussions, occur annually in the United States. Sports are second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of traumatic brain injury among people aged 15 to 24 years. (U.S National Library of Medicine). Coaches and parents often do not go through the right procedures or protocols when dealing with a teenager who has received a blow to the head. The usual questions that are asked when there is a head injury are, “what day is it, what’s the score, and how many fingers am I holding up?” Now these are not poor questions, but these questions alone cannot determine if a person has suffered a concussion. The correct method, which they are now implementing in most professional sports leagues, is for anyone with a head injury to take a legitimate concussion test performed by the team doctor. (WebbMD) At present the symptoms can be hit or miss. After receiving a concussion, research shows that an “estimated 80 to 90% of concussions heal spontaneously in the first 7 to 10 days”. The majority of teens who had encounter a concussion are due to sports. A concussion is a pathophysiological process that impacts the brain, typically caused by a trauma to the brain. Concussions are mainly caused by bumps, falls which makes the head move rapidly back and forth, or by a jolt. The brain is a 3 pound organ floating inside the skull. It’s surrounded by a cerebrospinal fluid, which shocks when its impacted. When the brains starts to move rapidly inside the skull, a concussion has taken place. One common cause is a direct hit to the head. The force makes the brain hit the inside of the skull. When the brain starts to slow down, it hits the other side of the inner skull. The other common scenario is a rotational concussion. This happens when the brain rotates from one side to another. As a result, the brain tissues are strained and sheared. In both cases, fragile neural pathways can be damaged, creating neurological disruption. Scientists suggest if an athlete has already experienced a concussion before, they’re 1-2 times more likely to have a second; 2-4 to have a third; and 3-9 to have a fourth. Surprisingly, research has shown females are more likely to have a concussion, and experience more symptoms compared to males. In addition, women take longer to recover than men. Concussions have shortterm and longterm consequences, or in some cases death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year emergency departments treat an estimated 135,000 children ages five to eighteen for sports-related brain injuries (National). Most of these injuries are concussions, and the children recover. The long term effects on children who suffer repeated concussions, even mild ones, is still not known. It’s hard to imagine a child as a disabled, middle-aged man, but repeated concussions could put a child at risk for severe conditions such as early onset dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders that require neurosurgery, but no one wants to think about while on the sidelines at a football game.
Athletics provide and develop kids with invaluable skills such as teamwork and determination. However, with some of those benefits comes the potential of a serious injury. Recently, concussions have been a major topic of discussion in the sports world. Many retired players of contact sports, including but not limited to, the National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL), have reported experiencing changes in their lifestyle both physically and psychologically. Concussions are a serious injury as they not only impact one’s life immediately but can also impact his or her future. It is important that we understand the science behind concussions and formulate ways to protect ourselves against them.

With the increasing number of concussions, the issue is relevant in today’s society. Concussions are a traumatic brain injury. In order to understand this growing issue, we need to become aware of what a concussion is, the testing and treatment that is used and the lifelong effects that concussions can cause. It is important for athletes to know this vital information about concussions in order to keep safe.
People who have had concussions in sports would know that you would get two to three weeks off and then you could play again. In a lot of contact sports concussions happen frequently and sometimes they may even be ignored just to keep playing. Concussions are a big deal and should never be ignored because they can cause further injuries that are more serious.
How do concussions affect the human brain? In order to know what affects the concussions does to the brain, we must first know what exactly a concussion is. Think of the brain as the yoke inside an egg, if the egg is shaken, the yoke will be obscured. This is exactly what a concussion is like.
