The school’s purpose provides the “why” to the school’s meaning of doing specific tasks such as selecting a curriculum or developing a new math tutoring program. The purpose also allows a school to remain focused on the main goals and prevents the school from swaying away from them. With all that has been mentioned, the school’s purpose and curriculum are two essential components that could possibly make or break a school’s impression, goals, and even the students.
Mission statements often describes the school’s purpose, it provides a glimpse of the school’s daily objectives, and their instructional values (Mission and Vision Definition). One of the external goals of Concord Middle School is, “overall student growth will increase by 25% and proficiency by 30% as indicated by EOG- Ready Exams, benchmarks, classroom observations, and EVAAS growth data (Concord Middle School Improvement Plan, 2015).” Concord Middle states that their goal is to increase their proficiency by 20% in standardized testing. While this is an excellent goal, the school must be considerate and have a plan that will not overwhelm and frustrate their students, staff, and parents. Concord Middle also states that its goal is to increase their school’s student success. If the students are not meeting the goals that are expected, it is important to closely investigate what is preventing success and doing whatever means necessary. With increasing the school’s proficiency rate and student’s growth, the school’s expectations of the students and teachers will be increased, while hopefully shaping their students as well as staff into more intelligent …show more content…

Progressivist believe that the student and/or learner should be the central focus, they also believe that teachers should act as guides for helping students reach their goals (Philosophy of Education). With the words in the mission statement in mind, one may conclude that students are the focus of the school as they are to be valued, keep engaged, challenged, and inspired. As discussed above, the school also shares a couple of characteristics of essentialism.
