Computers have undoubtedly improved life in many respects, but they have not always been so easy to work with, nor so widespread. Changes in the computer came about from technological advancement, as well as necessity of performance. With a world changing so quickly and getting bigger each day, it’s no wonder systems needed to be implemented to keep up with the fast pace of an evolving society. The twentieth century was a time of rapid technological progression, spurred by globalization, conflict, and access to information. Computing machines, like Herman Hollerith’s tabulator for the 1890 census, had been around for a while and operated with mechanical systems. These machines generally had only one purpose and could never be reprogrammed to do anything but what the original design had entailed. This was true for the Atanasoff-Berry computer, the first digital computer, as well. However, this computer ran using electronics, used binary number representation for its calculations, and separated computation and memory (O 'Regan). These three points were essential for all proceeding designs in digital computing. The first programmable digital computer was completed in 1946 by a team who developed it for use by the US Army. The machine was called the ENIAC, and its purpose was for calculating missile trajectories. The computer was very large, as it was made up of vacuum tubes, a device that simulated 1s and 0s. The ENIAC could be reprogrammed by physically rewiring the machine (O 'Regan), a task that was time consuming and arduous. Vacuum tubes were also very unreliable and prone to breaking, and produced a significant amount of heat. The change in design from computers before to these more dedicated purpose machines helped the spread of computers into all facets of life, from gaming and photography to banking and analysis. At the end of the 19th century, government officials feared that the time taken to process the US census numbers would take so long that the data would be outdated by completion. For this reason a tabulating machine was designed to cut that time taken in half. Computers like that one have been made and improved because they are necessary to accommodate a rapidly growing society, and the time from the 1950s to the 1970s saw magnificent changes in hardware and software design for these computers. As long as we are evolving and advancing, so must technology.
Computer science is one of the fastest growing career fields in modern history. Dating back only a few decades to the late 1950's and early 1960's, it has become on of the leading industries in the world today. Developed through the technological architecture of electrical engineering and the computational language of mathematics, the science of computer technology has provided considerable recognition and financial gain for many of its well deserving pioneers. Originally conceived as an organizational solution to the massive amounts of information kept on nothing more than paper, computers have evolved and advanced to become a common part of modern day life. In the early days of the computer age, the newest and most complex computers took up no less than an entire building or very large room. It was inconceivable that these machines would after only about fifty years be many times more powerful and small enough to be held with tweezers.
Technology is constantly evolving. Computers, tablets, and cell phones have changed drastically over the past several years. For many years, computers were not available for personal use. Computing machines did not emerge until the 1940’s and 1950’s. Questions about the ownership of the first programmable computer are still disputed today. It appears as if each country wants to take credit for this accomplishment. Computer enthusiasts believe that Great Britain’s Colossus Mark 1 computer in 1944 was the first programmable computer and others give credit to the United States’ ENIAC computer in 1946. However, in 1941, a relatively unknown German engineer built a programmable binary computer. His name was Howard Zuse and his Z3 computer has been acknowledged as the first electromechanical binary programmable computer.
An invention that has been a key component to almost everyone’s everyday life. The first computer was not in any way personal. It was enormous, expensive, and of course inconvenient. It cost roughly 500,000 dollars and weighed around 30 tons. It was invented at the University of Pennsylvania to perform ballistics calculations for the U.S during World War II. In 1964 what started out as machines used for calculating complex problems turned into technology that can be more accessible to the public when Douglas Engelbart shows a prototype of the modern computer, with a mouse and a graphical user interface (GUI). The computer was created to solve a serious number-crunching crisis. By 1880 the U.S. population had grown so large that it took more than seven years to calculate the U.S. Census. The government required a faster way to get the job done, which led to the creation of punch card computers which were as large as an entire room. In 1976 Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak start Apple Computers, but it wouldn't be until 1983 that Apple would release a computer with a GUI(graphical user interface). A GUI uses windows, icons, and text that can be manipulated by a person to communicate to the computer. Two years later Microsoft launched Windows, which is their response to Apple.
The subject of this term paper will be about computers in the 1950’s. The divisions that will be covered are; the types of computers there were, the memory capacity of computers, the programming languages of that time, and the uses of the computers for that time. Information will be gathered from the Internet, from books, and from magazines, and from the encyclopedia.
Computers are a magnificent feat of technology. They have grown from simple calculators to machines with many functions and abilities. Computers have become so common that almost every home has at least one computer, and schools find them a good source for information and education for their students (Hafner, Katie, unknown). Computers have created new careers and eliminated others and have left a huge impact on our society. With the UNIVAC gaining popularity some people began thinking that the computer was the next step towards a better technological future. Tom Watson Jr. was one of the few that saw a great future in computers. After struggling to convince his father that the computer was the next step in business Watson Jr. began development on the IBM 650. While the IBM 650 wasn’t technologically better than the UNIVAC it did sell better. Tom Watson Jr. brought an IBM company which previously declared that computers will have no place in the homes of America to a thriving business. While computers seemed to be doing wonders for businesses it didn’t truly ‘hit home’ until the birth of the internet.
In previous years, the first computers were mechanical, not electronic. One of the first computers ever made was the Difference Engine, designed by Charles Babbage. (Babbage, C, n.d.). The Difference Engine was able to calculate polynomials using the differences method. After the Difference Engine, Babbage began his work on an improved calculating engine, the Analytical Engine. The Analytical Engine used punch cards to operate, just like the Jacquard Loom. The Jacquard Loom used punch cards to control weaving that created interesting patterns in textiles. The punch cards were used in the Analytical Engine to define the input and the calculations to carry-out. The Analytical Engine had two major parts. The first part was the mill, which is similar to a modern day computer processing unit, or a CPU. The CPU is the brain of a modern day computer; it is what carries out modern day instructions inside a computer. The mill would execute what it received from the store. The second part was the store, which was the memory of the computer. “It was the world’s first general-purpose computer.” (Babbage, C, n.d.)....

Thousands of years ago calculations were done using people’s fingers and pebbles that were found just lying around. Technology has transformed so much that today the most complicated computations are done within seconds. Human dependency on computers is increasing everyday. Just think how hard it would be to live a week without a computer. We owe the advancements of computers and other such electronic devices to the intelligence of men of the past.
The biggest and easiest seen change that computers have had on today’s society can be seen in the workplace. Before computers became an office tool and were made available to the average employee, paperwork and sharing information in an office setting was done by many different individuals constantly filing and looking up figures. Now a computer can store large amounts of information that is readily available to virtually anyone with the click of a mouse button. One person can complete a job that in a time before computers would take many. Computers have made file cabinets and libraries almost obsolete. Businesses can share information nation or even world wide in a matter of seconds. For example, a word document file can be sent from an office in New York to an office in Los Angeles in under a minute, in the past this same information would have taken a week to be sent through the mail. Computers have changed the way that factories are run too. On an assembly line, before computers every job, no matter how easy or difficult, had to be done by an employee. Now, however, computers run machines and do most of these tasks.
The computer evolution has been an amazing one. There have been astonishing achievements in the computer industry, which dates back almost 2000 years. The earliest existence of the computer dates back to the first century, but the electronic computer has only been around for over a half-century. Throughout the last 40 years computers have changed drastically. They have greatly impacted the American lifestyle. A computer can be found in nearly every business and one out of every two households (Hall, 156). Our Society relies critically on computers for almost all of their daily operations and processes. Only once in a lifetime will a new invention like the computer come about.
Modern computers have incredible speed of processing because of fast access time. Access time is how long it takes for a character in memory to be passed to or from the CPU. Similarly Computer systems have many more characters like Volatility, Access Method, Portability, Cost Capacity etc. By these capabilities Computers today have gained access to every aspect of our life. It is the most wonderful and versatile tool ever invented by man.
