Computer programmers put in writing, analysis, and maintain programs and/or software which run the computers; they also write programs for coding into computer language. Programmers work long hours with concentrated workloads against firm deadlines.

Here is a listing of some of the tasks that Computer Programmers carry out:

• Code instructions into programming languages

• Debugging programs

• Organize records and reports

• Assisting computer operators to resolve computer issues

• Train amateurs in programming

• Writing instructions

• Set up flow charts and diagrams

During my senior year of high school I took two different courses in computer programming, C++ and Visual Basics, after taking these courses I started to get more interested in computers and programming; so, I decided my major would be in IT (Information Technology) in college. After attending University of Phoenix for 4 years, I earned my bachelors degree in C++; from there I landed a job at AIG insurance company as one of their computer programmers. I have been successful thus far in my career as a programmer and as I am learning new programming skills with each passing day.

Normally my week consists of 40 hours, but from time to time I have to work longer hours, due to emergencies in the system and some which requires to be done at a certain time; sometimes the same day. Things can get tough at times, but it is something I enjoy doing; I work with other programmers in an office environment; though there are projects that require us to work alone.

If you want to make it as a computer programmer, I believe one as to be computer devotee, be able to stay focus, have good problem-solving skills, reliable, organize, good communication skills, and have the ability to meet deadlines. Again, these are just a few factors; if interested in this type of work field, earn at least a bachelors degree in computer programming.

Working as a computer programmer it has a lot of benefits which includes holidays, vacation, retirement plans, health and dental plans; which are just a few to start with. Starting out as a new programmer, the hourly wage I would say is a good start, which is usually around $25-$47. That is about $70,000 + a year. Would you not say that is a good start? I would say so. With that said, I know I will be a programmer until I retire; it is something I definitely love to do and what one can ask for more than loving what they get paid to do.
