Email is a popular way to communicate online. With ever-growing technology online communication is only becoming more popular among people today. The question that remains is what impact does email have on our communication? Email has different impacts depending on if it is for professional or personal use. Email as a form of communication for professional use is positive, while impact for personal use is fairly negative. Overall the impact of email on interpersonal communication has positive and negative effects that can affect each other.
Computer Mediated Communication, or CMC, has become prevalent in our lives today. Email happens to be the most common form of CMC within workplaces and organizations. (Darks & Bakker, 2010) Emails in the

My positive experiences with email have mostly been with gaining information on work related details. My professors send emails about projects and their due dates, I send and receive information with an alumni who I am interning with, and I get rehearsal schedules and other important information regarding any work I am currently involved in with the Drama Club. I have also experienced negative impacts on my communication while using email. I have had many times where I have tried to contact someone and my email has never been answered. In terms of my interpersonal communication there have been emails that I have sent and had to reestablish what I was trying to say because a misunderstanding happened along the way. As with any form of online communication the misunderstanding might have come from a lack of nonverbal cues or, with many types of communication, it could have come from a lack of shared knowledge. Personally I have experienced a decrease in face-to-face communication while participating in email and other forms of online discussion. There have been many times where my friends and I would chat online with each other while sitting in the same room. Specifically, there was a time where a friend and I were sitting in the same room while sending emails to each other as a joke since we don’t communicate through email as much as through social media sites such as
Among all the communication mediums used in an organization, emails are used widely as an effective form of a business communication. From the company’s CEO to an employee of the business, emails are very easy and inexpensive. “Internal emails can function as an effective communication for sharing basic information, such as new cafeteria prices, paper use guidelines, or security precautions, for example. Sending simple messages to an entire workforce with just the click of a mouse is fast, easy, convenient and can save the company money”. (Lorette,
E-Communications are a vital part of most workplaces. Share your experience using e-communications at work or in the academic setting. Have you ever had any mishaps or felt someone was engaging in unethical or unprofessional behavior? Explain, keeping in mind the specific guidelines on pages 77-78.
My initial assumptions and imaginations about on-line communities are formed by personal preferences in how I choose to communicate, limited knowledge and understanding, and most significantly limited experiences. I use email to communicate for a variety of purposes. I will send a brief message to somebody I intend to call or write a letter to very soon to let them know I am thinking about them. I also use email to send information that would be more beneficial to see in text than hear as a voice message such as emailing a student in any of my classes at CSUN about an upcoming assignment. However, email is not my first choice of communication. For example, I just received an email from a friend of mine in Oregon who I have not heard from in many months. She sent me a lengthy and involved email about what has been happening with her and her family. As I was beginning to email her back I stopped to instead write her a letter. Using a chosen note card and handwriting a letter conveyed a more personal approach to the correspondence. Of course, I email many people often, but there are instances where I feel that communicating via email is not as personal and thoughtful.
Clear communication via email, and instant messaging are traits of a stellar digital citizen. For instance, I appreciate a person that sends me an email that is direct, and to the point verses wordy, and all over the place. This is because the sender thought enough about me, to save me some time, by writing a good email, which in turn tells me they value me and my time.
I read various emails addressing remote workplace communication and I solicited feedback from my team. I reviewed all the information I learned and started to implement them all into practice. I immediately set expectations on how I planned to communicate. I established the best method of communication for serious material and it is only during our Friday conference call or private one-on-one conversations. I decreased my number of “unless” emails because my team stated forwarded emails are ineffective. Emails now address the receiver’s level of understanding, my purpose for the communication, and respect. Effective communication is vital to the success of my distributed team. It helps build trust and creates an environment where creative ideas and problem-solving are welcomed and encouraged. Messages are sent through various means including text messaging, emails, instant messaging and even our internal social
Over the last century, information technology, such as the Internet, has brought our society forward and helps us get through life more efficiently and conveniently. In addition, it helps making global communication easier and faster as compared to hand-written mails that may take days if not weeks to reach its intended recipient. However, with such luxury and convenience, there is a debate whether the way we currently interact with fellow human beings with the help of technology is good or bad to our personal relationships. The Internet has increased the amount of communication globally, yet ironically the very technology that helps us increase our communication hinders our ability to socialize effectively in real life and create a healthy interpersonal relationship.
The continued development of information and communication technologies has virtualized the teaching process in many ways. Instructors are now using various forms of multimedia and web-based systems in delivering and teaching content to students. The use of computer mediated communication (CMC) has enabled synchronous (realtime chat) and asynchronous (forums, e-mails) communication to provide a more socially constructed form of learning.
Teamwork and social skills are the cornerstone of functioning effectively in a business driven environment because businesses require networking and interpersonal communication skills with another individual. At times, meeting face to face is not applicable so online means of communication must be used. However, we, as human beings, are susceptible to misinterpreting information if all the details are not clearly explained. Misinterpreting information can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. As Chuck Martin declares in his article “The Importance of Face-to-Face Communication at Work”, “A global survey shows that 67 percent of senior executives and managers say their organization would be more productive if their superiors communicated more often by personal discussion. While they desire more personal discussion from their superiors, however, the top personal method of communicating for these same business leaders is e-mail, based on the survey by NFI Research.” The survey shows that even senior executives value personal communication as it can shed light on confusing scenarios and difficult obstacles. Delving deeper into the second part of the quotation, we can see a power play that is placed on the senior executives by their superiors using technology and online communication. The only way to
The approach of communication has changed a lot due to technology. Technology has helped shy individuals pursue more friendships leading to more communication. “A considerable (48%) of young adults in Western societies report shyness; thus, large numbers of people experience fear and avoidance of face-to-face communication, which affects their lives in many ways” (Lynne & Keaten, 2007, p. 350). These new ways of communication due to technology has assisted these shy individuals in entering the world of communication a little more smoothly. One who is shy does not have to endure a face-to-face conversation as much as one would have before this modern technology. The assumption of removing face-to-face communication is that shy individuals will not experience the fear or awkwardness associated with interaction (Lynne & Keaten, 2007). This is why these individuals begin communicating via e-mail, instant messaging, texting, and many more types of technology that avoids instant responses and the anxiety of being in the presence of another person. Santra and Giri (2009) stated in their article “Analyzing Computer-Mediated Communication and Organizational Effectiveness” that those who wish to communicate with others can do so in their own time and place without the need for face-to-face contact. These new means of communication have helped individuals who prefer to avoid contact with others have a way to be comfortable while gaining various relationships.
We are living in the 21st century, the technology is more advanced. If you stepping outside in the society, you will see that everyone is caring a smartphone around with them every day, so that they can check their social medias at anytime and anywhere. Nowadays, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, and other social media, dominates both online and offline communication of college students and adults.
Electronic mail (E-mail) cannot replace personal contact. David Angell states that electronic email has many advantages, “…eliminates phone tag, …breaks down the distance and time barriers of telephone calls and traditional written communication, …shortens the cycle of written communication, …improves productivity, …creates flexibility…by reducing telephone interruptions.” (Angell-Heslop 2). There is a tendency to be less formal or careful, which can sometimes provoke anger. Remember that direct, person-to-person contact is best for handling sensitive, difficult, complex, or
Communication is important in life. Companies need to communicate with other companies and customers. The managers also need to communicate with the staff. The technology provides us with many means of communication, the most important of which is e-mail.
Face to face communication has an abundance of benefits; these benefits include the ability to see facial expressions to prevent miscommunications. It also helps us to become more skilled listeners. When communicating face to face you can gain trust of others. There are not very many negatives of face to face interactions. Electronic communication on the other hand has very few positives, more negatives exists when using this form of communication. The benefits include meeting new people, gaining more courage to talk to people, giving advice and being able to communicate with friends and family that live far away. The negatives include people becoming less social, cyber bulling, cyber theft
A popular way that people share information is E-mail. The first E-mail was sent in 1971. It was sent between two computers, that were sitting beside each other in the same room, and said “qwertyuiop” (Arandilla, 2011). While the meaning of this message has been lost over time, E-mail has become increasingly popular throughout the years. G-mail, an online email site created by Google, has over 45 million accounts.
The internet has revolutionized all forms of communication since the beginning of its existence. The world has now become smaller' or more like a global village', so to speak. The internet was first used by the U.S military for communications purposes. The internet, from the communication point of view, has brought on new developments and techniques to keep in touch not only for individuals, but for businesses as well. An example of how the internet has impacted communication would be an example of doctors now communicating through live video feeds via the internet with patients or other doctors to diagnose patients or to even guide and advise surgeons through complicated procedures.
