Introduction The internet has spurred a revolution in the communications field. Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) has introduced new communication methods such as social networking sites, e-mail, blogs, and text messaging. People are communicating now in ways that would have never been thought of just 30 years ago. The rapid developments in new communication mediums makes it essential for the communications discipline to be at the forefront of new research and discoveries. Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) is a tried and true communication theory that posits that people will adapt their language to others in a certain context (Ayoko, Härtel, Callen, 2002; Gasiorek, 2013). CAT is interdisciplinary in nature and has been researched across disciplines including communication, sociolinguistics, social psychology, and sociology (Dragojevic, Gasiorek, Giles, 2016). Researchers have found that people accommodate their language in particular social interactions to reach certain goals (). Goals can vary from wanting to set …show more content…
CAT addresses these accommodations and can be broadly defined as a theory that “seeks to explain and predict such communicative adjustments, and model how others in an interaction perceive, evaluate, and respond to them” (Dragojevic et al., 2014, p. 1). It is important to note that CAT does not only address the changes that are made in an interaction but also examines how people react to the changes. The theory posits that people enter an interaction with specific intergroup goals (Ayoko, et al., 2002; Gasiorek, 2013). Gasiorek (2013) stated that according to theory “each participant comes to an interaction with an initial orientation towards their speaker and the encounter, based on speakers’ interpersonal and intergroup histories, as well as social norms and values”
Communication competence is the ability to achieve ones goals in manner that is personally acceptable and, ideally acceptable to others. (Adler, 2013) Communication competence is the ability to choose a communication behavior that is both appropriate and effective for a given situation. Interpersonal competency permits one to accomplish their communication goals without initiating the other party to lose face. In order to communicate properly and ideally you must first learn what the best way to address any situation and how it will be most accepted. Are you a competent communicator?
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
Digital communication has evolved in such a rapid time. Some say that it is bad, others say it is good, and other say it can be good and bad. In Gerald Graff’s and Cathy Birkenstein’s book, They Say/I say, they have a chapter that talks about digital communication. They talk about the pros and cons on it as well. Digital communication is destroying young user’s ability to communicate but it also is helping spread viral memes quickly, and bringing people together.
Communication is an ongoing process in which individuals exchange messages whose meanings are influenced by the history of the relationship and the experiences of the participants. (Adler, p.384) Communication depends on relationships between the people who are communicating, and on common basics between them. Problems in communications between people may arise due to differences in cultures, perceptions, values, and expectations from life.
The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals. The reason why I’m doing so is because I’m still on that learning curve…an ongoing process. If can recall back to all of our assignment in this course they all bring one collective point. That point is that, Interpersonal communication is an essential skill in everything that we do in life.
The two processes that are involved in every interaction are assimilation and accommodation. Assimilation means gaining some knowledge and making it fit in with what you already know. This is a necessity in order to develop our cognitive structures. This is a process that everyone encounters even though they may not be aware of when it is happening. Our perceptions of things are enhanced when something of the outside world is assimilated or added into our internal world. Accommodation is the changing of one’s structure of thought. During this process, the gaining of new knowledge fails to co-exist with what we already know. Therefore, we must accommodate or adjust our previous way of thinking to maintain stability. These two processes interact to form a state of equilibrium.

As in all aspects of personal and professional life, having effective communication is a key element of success. Effective communication can benefit your relationships with people. By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Emphasis is placed on communication being clear by being transmitted strongly.
Communication is now instantaneous. Electronic communication has come a long way in the past century. It started with person to person communication via the telegraph, eventually evolving with devices like the telephone. Communication became quicker and the ability to mass communicate became available to a select few. In recent years further development of the internet has made it possible for an individual or a business to mass communicate on its own. Started as a way for individuals to communicate and connect with one another over the internet, social media has evolved into a valuable tool for business. Social media is not only beneficial to modern business, but necessary.
The twenty-first century is the era of technological innovations and new styles of communication. With the creation of new state-of-the-art computers as well as new advances in online communication, staying connected to the world and people surrounding you has never been easier. Arguably the most popular form of online communication, social media, encompassing platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, have become a primary source of communication and the feeling of connectedness in everyday life. The conversation before two-thousand and ten highlighted many favorable aspects of social media and how it positively encourages and facilitates human interaction and interpersonal communication. However, social media, throughout the online communication
Communication is a critical thing in today’s society because the exchange of information is vital in living. People live both locally and globally through technological connections by maintaining contact and interaction between individuals from all corners of the world. Communication binds people, helps maintaining the society healthy and enables people to interact and make friends from different regions and cultures. According to Adrian in 2006, communication and information technology plays a great role in the individuals’ life. There is a high rate of growth of the communication technology industry and the benefits as more people come up with new means of communication by day. A point has reached where activities cannot function without information technology due to the many benefits which come along with the current day technologies. Moreover, the industry plays a great role in improving the nation’s economy by facilitating fast and easier means of doing things and offering employment to many people across the world.
In recent years, technology has become the most used and preferred way of communicating, extending across many platforms. All of these programs, such as e-mail, instant messaging, social networking websites in conjunction with text messaging and the ability to access all of these entities on the go, have come into fruition based on the immense and widely found growth made in technological advancements that have occurred in our society. With this, a massive change has developed in regards to referencing how we as humans engage in communication. We have now shifted into a society that relies heavily on the existence of digital communication, whether it be through the means of a mobile device (text messaging) or the Internet (Facebook, Twitter,

Interaction is a significant part of our daily lives. Oral communication with others is inevitable, and therefore it is crucial for us to acquire the skills to do so correctly. Aside from simply stating words or expressing ideas, oral communication serves various purposes. Oral communication allows an individual to express emotions, ideas, and feelings; it gives people the ability to empower, inspire, and motivate those who listen; and it allows people to share knowledge and traditions, as well as build their self-esteem. Oral communication is also useful in leading us to new discoveries, ideas, cultures, and perspectives (O’Neill). Thus, oral communication serves several different purposes in daily life; yet each of these purposes are connected to an even larger purpose. According to the textbook Communication: Making Connections, “Effective communication is critical to living successfully in today’s soc...
