Complacency and Fueling Safety

In some states there are rules and regulations that dictate how a individual should go about refueling a vehicle at a gas station. If these rules and regulations are not followed as stated an individual can be cited a fine. The fine can vary from area to area and are normally pretty expensive. However these rules and regulations are set in place for the safety of the operator and those that are in the vicinity of the operator as well. Leaving a vehicle unattended while refueling can lead to many dangers and wrong doings. A few things that might possibly happen are the automatic shut off on the fuel pump nozzle might not shut off properly and fuel could continuously spill out of the vehicles fuel door, or someone may get the idea to come take the nozzle out of your vehicle and place it in their own and fill up their tank on your own dime. Fuel spilling out onto the ground can pose many threats because of its flammability. Fuel can be ignited by many different sources but just to name a few there are static electricity, fire, and heat. Fuel has a very lox evaporating temperature so it dries very quickly and the liquid fuel is not the most flammable part of fuel, the fumes are. If you were to throw a lit cigarette into a bucket of fuel it would most likely just go out, but if you held the lit cigarette over a fuel source that has strong fumes the chances of a flash fire are extremely high. Also If some other individual was to come take your gas nozzle not only could you be getting stole from but the individual could also be up to no good. That person could possibly vandalize the fuel pump, or purposely spill fuel on the ground or vehicle to start a fire, which would be classified as arson. ...rtant, the list is endless. There is no room for complacency when it comes to your job, or your life. Because it could just be your life or some innocent individuals life that gets taken because of complacency.

There are many issues that can be avoided through concentration, being constantly aware of your surroundings, and not being complacent. Every accident can be avoided in someway or another and there is no god excuse for any type of careless ness or complacency. Through the error of my ways I have learned to pay more attention to what I am doing and not to be complacent on the job, no matter what it may be about, from something such as leaving a fuel pump nozzle in a vehicle and driving off, to something as big as letting a drunk driver get away. NOTHING is to small, every detail counts when it comes to being aware of your surroundings and what you are doing.
