Jealousy is such an emotion that every human faces once in their life. It often arises when someone wishes to have something someone else does or want to be like someone else because of which many peoples’ personality changes. Jealousy is a corrosive emotion that deteriorates not only one’s character, health, and relationship but it also causes extreme irrationality which can lead to death. This shows that envy/jealousy is more volatile than most people presume and therefore should be prevented whenever possible. Jealousy can make one feel apprehensive about their relationship, questioning their thoughts and decisions.
Everyone at some point in their life feels rivalry or competition towards others. This greatly affects our ability to comprehend people, and eventually results in hostile behavior and paranoia. This plays a large role throughout the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles; for the main conflict in the novel lies strictly between the main character, Gene, and his intense feelings towards his best friend Phineas; which would later tear their friendship apart. These traits give people a blind eye; they no longer want to understand others. Although competition and rivalry are apart of human nature, it can be a very destructive force.
William Penn once said, "The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves". At some point in everyone's life, one will experience jealousy. Jealousy effects enemies, families, and even best friends, and it often results in permanent damage to even the strongest relationships. Gene Forrester learns this the hard way. His envy of Phineas causes him to hurt both Finny and himself.

In the long run, all types of greed can lead to a corrupt society because people may end up fighting one another just to get what they want, or make sacrifices that can be harmful to not only themselves, but for others as well. If greediness in people was a puzzle, it will forever remain incomplete until the missing piece of contentment is found through whatever it is they have been longing to have.
The absence or presence of invidiousness has the potency to strengthen or dismember friendships. In John Knowles’ A Separate Peace, Gene Forrester and his daring roommate, Finny, discover the dangerous impact of enviousness on their friendship. Gene’s jealousy of Finny’s athletic capabilities, Finny’s unenviable thoughts and actions, and Brinker’s suspicions that Gene’s envy catalyzed Finny’s accident were all contributing factors to the ups and downs in Gene’s and Finny’s relationship. Detesting a friend for his/her successes can rupture even the strongest relationships. Gene’s invidiousness of Finny’s numerous sports achievements transforms into a resentful hatred.
