When it comes to the topic of leadership, most of us will agree that we are curious as well as critical of our leaders, and their actions. Political and religious leaders are often under close scrutiny. As influential leaders they set the vision, tone and goals of any organization. Hence, a leader 's , behavior and leadership style are constantly scrutinized and if appropriate, their leadership traits ought to positively impact followers. According to Northouse (2012), “A leader affects and is affected by followers and both leader and followers are affected in turn by the situation that surrounds them”(p.5). Efficient leaders are remembered by their visions and actions.
Leadership can be defined as “A process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2012, p.6). Leadership is the ability to care, and in caring, engage, ignite, and mobilize followers. Furthermore, a leader's character is an integral part of leadership. If a leader is perceived as dishonest, self-centered or ruthless these qualities will affect his. Followers generally react negatively, confused, or uncertain, and will less likely to focus on achieving the desired goals of the organization. Our religious leaders are evaluated regularly and their character do affect our perception of their leadership. This paper will explore the characteristics of Pope BonifaceVIII, a pope during the early fourteenth century, and Pope Francis, the current pope of the Catholic Church.

Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920, shortly after Marshal Jozef Pilsudski defeated the Soviet Red Army to gain Polish independence. Like most young boys, Karol enjoyed an active childhood, playing soccer and swimming often, although he was most known for his remarkable intelligence and respect at a very young age. When he was eight years old, his mother, Emilia, died of an infection of the heart, and shortly afterward, his only brother, a physician, contracted scarlet fever from a patient and passed away. When learning of the deaths of his mother and brother, witnesses recalled young Karol’s response to the news to be a simple remark: “Such was God’s will.” By the time he was 21, Hitler had already occupied his homeland, ending Poland’s only period of independence between 1772 and 1989. Shortly after the Nazi invasion, Karol’s father, Karol Senior, also passed away after a prolonged illness, leaving 20 year old Karol without family. (Vatican Online)
Two of the most influential people in the world are Pope Francis and the 14th Dalai Lama and they are very similar in many ways such as their popularity, their philosophies, and how their words can change the lives of many people. The Pope and the Dalai Lama have millions of followers listening to what they have to say and there teachings that is a big reason why the religions they teach (Catholicism and Buddhism) are some of the most popular religions in the world. These two leaders have the power to influence many different people from many different walks of life. Even though both religions are completely different the Pope and the Dalai Lama are very similar in many ways.
In chapter two, ‘Francis and His Companions,’ Cunningham exposes the considerable growth in Francis of Assisi’s influence, as he recounts his companions that joined him after deciding to live his life. The chapter is significant because it exposes how Francis of Assisi’s gospel is different from the orthodox Catholic practices, which recognized the pope, as the sole Vicar of Christ. (Cunningham 32). This chapter is important in my life because it reinforces my conviction God is the almighty and all-powerful, and all people regardless of the status of the needed to worship
Simon Klinek discusses about how as well as why respectable leaders are leaders the reasons behind why they do what they do and the reactions these leader’s actions cause to those surrounding them. The fact in which a person becomes a leader is a matter of choice, and a willingness to put another person before one’s self the idea of getting the fall so that another is able to triumph and succeed. Simon utilizes ethos, pathos, and logos in an effective manner during his presentation examples are as follows.
I would like to compare/contrast Pope Francis vs. Pope Benedict XVI. During his first year in office, Pope Francis has become one of the world’s greatest social innovators. Many have celebrated Pope Francis as a spiritual leader, diplomat, and a politician. Pope Francis is a leader to start something new by launching a global campaign against hunger. Using social media, such as YouTube, Pope Francis sent his message out to elect a day, December 10th, for a world-wide rally. Additionally, Pope Francis is known for sending out tweets @Pontifex. By the use of social media, the Pope has captured attention all across the globe. Take for instance the time Pope Francis washed the feet of Muslim women in prison. Bloggers went wild with photos that are worth a thousand words.
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The feud between King Philip IV of France and Pope Boniface VIII represented a time in medieval Europe as nations sought to consolidate power under the monarch of the country. However, Pope Boniface VIII opposed this change in Europe, instead trying to maintain the great influence the papacy had reached under the rule of Pope Innocent III almost 100 years before. Another factor in the feud were the constant disputes between France and England, which required a large amount of money to fund. King Philip IV helped pay for these wars by taxing the clergy of France, which usually required the consent of the pope. In a display of power, Pope Boniface VIII released the bull Clericis Laicos, which gave the pope the power to excommunicate any monarch who taxes his clergy with the pope’s consent.
During the middle ages, the popes and the holy roman empire both desired power. The roles that each of them portrayed are very similar. The Pope was the "ruler" or main governing body of the Catholic Church, and every king was the leader of his country or estate. The conflict between the popes and the Holy Roman Emperors emerged as a result of land guarantees in Italy, authority over the church, and the unchristian conduct the popes saw in the holy roman emperors. The popes likewise needed to remain safe from the holy roman emperors, who may undermine to subject the papacy to their control. Surely the enigma of leadership is that it contains many truths, with the only universal truth being that none are universal, but empirically sound to aid the leader in guiding followers and the institutions they comprise.
At the beginning of the sixteenth century church theologian, Martin Luther, wrote the 95 Theses questioning the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church. In this essay I will discuss: the practices of the Roman Catholic Church Martin Luther wanted to reform, what Martin’s specific criticism of the pope was, and the current practices Pope Francis I is interested in refining in the Roman Catholic Church today.
In today’s society, Effective leaders are essential to an organization and exceptional leadership techniques impact the success of reaching goals. Most important leaders often viewed and analyzed as a key component of an organization improperly trained leader can cause both moral and costly negative consequences. Even though unprepared leaders lead in our community today, Billy Graham’s leadership style and communication skills affected the United States because he exhibits characteristic of a leader. There were several obstacles as a leader that Billy Graham endured as a visionary, and his leadership effectiveness and traits observed throughout his ministry.
Leadership seems to be a somewhat nebulous, undefinable trait, yet, one can readily note examples of it—images of history’s greatest leaders come to mind: Abraham Lincoln; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Mahatma Gandhi; Julius Caesar; and so forth. These men exemplify effective leaders, not because of their physical prowess but due to their their phenomenal characters, whether they be as civil rights leaders, generals, or presidents, which allowed them to inspire others and instill them with confidence and purpose.
John Maxwell is a distinguished author, speaker and pastor who specializes on leadership and leadership development. This paper is outlines my reflections from watching his YouTube video presentation of his five levels of leadership. It was insightful that Maxwell, (2013) explained that all leaders start at level one, then continue to develop in their capabilities through level five. He outlines each of the five stages, identifying the attributes and tendencies of each of the levels. He describes that followers view leaders through different lenses, each the lenses is a reflection of one of the five stages.
This essay gives a brief outline of the major developments in the role of the Papacy between the Early Church and the present day. It will cover four aspects. The development of the papacy as a temporal ruler, Papal elections, the Curia and the development of the ‘mission role’ of the Papacy. It will explore how the papacy changed from being an organisation that had the influence to appoint kings and arrange state borders to one with a billion followers. These followers see the papacy as being responsible for the administration, pastoral and spiritual care of their membership.
