Leadership style varies from person to person and situation to situation. I was expecting her to tell me one of the leadership styles that we learned about in class. I was thinking she would say authoritarian, democratic, or laissez-faire like I read about in our textbook (Marquis & Huston, 2015). The nurse leader I interviewed informed me that her leadership style is ‘servant’. She furthered explained it as, Jesus Christ, she puts others before herself. She would never make one of the employees she manages do anything she is not willing to do herself. She added that she sees herself as a role model not a manager. She believes that in order to be an effective manager she must be a role model. The way she described herself I belief she is a democratic leader. If they are not working then she is responsible for figuring out the reasons why they are not working. The nurse leader told me that what is best is not always the safest. She explained this as a nurse has been doing something for the same 5 years, changing the way the nurse does it can cause safety issues. This why when making improvements the leader needs to understand that there will be a learning curve and be proactive.
