The movie, 12 Years A Slave, was directed by Steve McQueen and it was released on October 18, 2013. The cast of the movie was Chitwetel Ejiofor as Solomon, Lupita Nyong 'o as Patsey, Michael Fassbender as Mr. Epps, Sarah Paulson as Mrs. Epps, Brad Pitt as Bass, Benedict Cumberbatch as Mr. Ford, Paul Giamatti as Mr. Freeman, Adepero Oduye as Eliza, and much more. The mvie is about a man, Solomon Northup, who started out as a free man, but then was captured and put into slavery. During his 12 years as a slave, he has survived as human property of several different slave masters. Throughout this essay I 'm going to talk about the differences of the book and the movie, which one I found more compelling, and interviews from the director and some of the actors.
Every movie and book has their differences. The first difference I notice about 12 Years a Slave was at the beginning of the movie. In the book, it started to talk about Solomon 's life as a free man, but in the movie it started in a flash-forward. In the flash-forward, Solomon was a slave and he was laying down in a tight place where all of the slaves slept. Then it started with his life as a free slave. In the movie, you were able to witness the horrible beatings the slaves had to receive and what life was like as a slave, but reading the book makes you feel like you were there. When I read any book, I imagine myself there. I would fell any pain, love, laughter, joy, or any feelings the characters received. In 12 Years a Slave, I was able to picture all the horrible moments from being treated like livestock animals to being beaten to death. Reading the book, 12 Years A Slave, showed me how bad slavery was in the 1800 's. Throughout the reading the book I had tears running down my face because of how bad the slaves were treated. The book version really inspired me and showed me everything I needed to know about
