Before I started taking this class I wasn’t sure on what Buddhism was, meant or where it even came from. I used to associate it as just another Asian religion and used to think it was practiced mainly in India. I then decided I didn’t want to live in ignorance, I wanted to learn more on the things I don’t know much about, leading me to take this class, through reading the book “Buddhism Plain and Simple” I learned more on what Buddhism is, how it has come to be and the differences it has with other religions, I especially learned it isn’t practiced mainly in India.
The core factor in Buddhism is letting ourselves find the truth. We are the main subject and focus to our own lives and being able to find truth helps us move forward in the four …show more content…

Is it a philosophy? Is it a religion? Many mistake Buddhism as a religion or a philosophy but in fact its neither. No one is able to really depict what it is exactly. A religion is defined as a worship of a superhuman controlling power, from a god or gods. Now Buddha does have a religious dimension that leads to the way of Buddha that is quite real and vital. However, when you’re getting involved in a religion you are converting yourself into something such as a Jew, a Christian or a Muslim and you’re prohibited from following other religions. Whereas with Buddhism you don’t change into anything you are just simply following teachings to understand the human suffering and liberation from needless suffering without worshiping a god. Buddhism is simply studying the nature of one’s own self. As stated in “Buddhism Plain and Simple”, Buddha encouraged peopled to “know for yourselves that certain things are unwholesome and wrong and when you do, then give them up, when you know for yourselves that certain things are wholesome and good, then accept them and follow them (page 9).” That message was said to see and examine for yourself. When you see what’s true, embrace it. Because the whole point of Buddha is just to see. Buddhism is not the same type of belief system as other religion out there. Religions such as Christianity is different from Buddhism. Buddhism does not believe in a superior creator such as god, Christianity is a monotheistic religion, Christians believe that Christ is the son of god. Christians praise god but Buddhism does not look up to a god, Buddha confuted the theistic argument that a God created the universe. However, many other different religions have their own meaning of god. The goal of Buddhism was to eliminate mental suffering by mediation and learning one’s self.
