The Devil in Farewell to Arms and The Outsider Once we knew that literature was about life and criticism was about fiction--and everything was simple. Now we know that fiction is about other fiction, is criticism in fact, or metaphor. And we know that criticism is about the impossibility of anything being about life, really, or even about fiction, or finally about anything. Criticism has taken the very idea of "aboutness" away from us. It has taught us that language is tautological, if it is not nonsense, and to the extent that it is about anything it is about itself.
One of the fascinations of reading literature comes when we discover in a work patterns that have heretofore been overlooked. We are the pattern finders who get deep enjoyment from the discovery of patterns in a text. And true to the calling we have noticed a pattern in and around A Farewell to Arms which, to our knowledge, no one has seen before. Although there are many editions of the novel, and as a result the pagination is slightly different in various editions, it is the case that all editions have forty-one chapters to be found in five books. Here is what we have discovered: if you multiply 41 by 5 you get 205. And now if you take the number of letters in Frederic's name (8) and add that to the number of letters in Catherine's name (9) you get 17. 205 + 17 = 222. And if you grant that the time of the events in the novel, counted properly, is three years, then the pattern we have discovered starts to emerge as figure on ground or as lemon juice ink on a secret message when held over a candle. For what is the product of 222 and 3 but the infamous 666 of Revelations 13:18?
Imagine now our delight when we discovered a similar 666 pattern in The Outsider. If you multiply the number of letters in Meursault's name times the number of letters in `Albert' times the number of letters in `Arab' you get 216. Add to that the 6 of `Albert' and multiply by 3 (which is the number one gets when dividing the number of chapters in Part one (6) by the number of books (2) that make up The Outsider) and surprise of surprises: the meaning revealing number `666' once again emerges!
On his journey far away from the town, he feels as if the only way he’ll find true peace is if he is dead. While attempting to end his life in the river he once crossed, he finally hears the Om. All of his hard work and searching lead to this very moment. If he would not have taken his time to leave the Brahmins, the Samanas, the Buddhist, and even Kamala, he would have not found his Om. Soon after finding his Om, he has an idea to go find the Ferryman that once helped him out. He goes to find this Ferryman and after telling him his story the man realizes that the river has “spoken” to Siddhartha. Vasudeva says, “You will learn it, but not from me. It was the river that taught me how to listen; you too will learn how from the river.” The river is given life like qualities as if it would be a person, too. To think that the whole time he ventured and tried to listen to all of these powerful people, he just had to stop and listen to one unnoticed, inanimate object that gave life
Can you imagine yourself locked up in a room with no doors? Similar to a room with no doors, there is no way out of hell if it was one's destiny. In the short story "The Devil & Tom Walker" by Washington Irving, the main character's fate is hell because of his wrong decisions in life, accepting a deal with the devil for earthly benefits. Irving reinforces his message about not making decisions that may damn your soul with the use of literary elements and figurative language. Wisely, Irving combines characterization, mood and point of view to perpetuate the theme of the story in the reader's mind.
The Legends of Arthur are considered the most treasured pieces of collected literature. Many writers have been fascinated by the mythical Knight and his adventurous tales. Of those authors are two of the most recognized Sir Thomas Malory and Mary Stewart. Though the dates of which they lived were separate (Malory -1400's; Stewart -1900's), their love and interest of the Legend must have been equally great. If you look, though, and read the two stories, one might find a way to compare and contrast the two. Both authors use a unique point of view that are surprisingly different from on another.
Intellectual, mysterious, extraordinary. The qualities of a romantic hero influence an Arthurian Legend. An Arthurian legend is the tale of King Arthur and the knights of the round table. Because these are pieces of Romantic literature, Arthurian Legends contain romantic heroes. The Crowning of Arthur, Arthur Becomes King, and Sir Launcelot du Lake are all Arthurian Legends that contain romantic heroes. The Crowning of Arthur refers to what happened before King Arthur was conceived, after he was delivered, and how he legitimately became King Arthur. While Arthur Becomes King is about what he did to become ruler, Sir Launcelot du Lake is about an adventure with one of the knights of the round table, Sir Launcelot du Lake. These three Arthurian Legends have a theme in common. White and Malory uses the protagonist’s chivalry in order to show that when someone has bravery, they will overcome many situations.
The nicest people can end up being the most cruel people you know. There is a little evil inside all of us, what brings it out differs us. Characters in both “Hopfrog”, by Edgar Allen Poe, and “The Devil and Tom Walker”, by Washington Irving, has the evil stripped out of them. The evil inside Hop-Frog is brought out through the constant manipulation from his boss, the king. Tom Walker tries to hide his devilish ways by putting on a religious mask, and fails to not get taken away. “Hopfrog” and “The Devil and Tom Walker”, prove that no matter how hard one tries to conceal it, the truth will show through.
"The Devil and Tom Walker" is a tale around a man who carries on with a shameless existence of voracity . Walker runs into a man and sees that he is chopping down another person's timber. The man is the Devil and that is obscure until the Devil uncovers himself to Tom Walker. The manipulation of the Devil is to abundant for Walker as he mulls over his meeting with the Devil, and Walker apprehends that riches is the primary need for him.
In the Stories, “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving and “The Devil and Daniel Webster” by Stephen Vincent Benet there are many similarities and also many differences. For Example, the characters, the families, and the devil. In the end, one story turns out completely opposite from the other.
Stories have an opportunity to leave the reader with many different impressions. When you look a different characters within the stories the ones that leave the greatest impressions are the ones that tend to scare us. The figures in Bob Dylar’s “Where Are You Going, Where Have you been?”, in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”, and Stephen King’s “The Man in the Black Suite” all instill a bit of fear in the reader. They are symbols that represent the devil or devil like attributes in people and the uncertainties of human nature.
The media is a dominating aspect of American culture. The way the media depicts crime and criminal behavior has an effect on the way society views crime and criminals. Television series such as CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, Criminal Minds and countless others, have become very popular in our society today showing that our culture has an immense interest in crime. It is clear that there is a fascination with criminals and why they do the things they do. To analyze the way crime dramas represent crime and criminal behavior, I completed a content analysis of one episode of Criminal Minds. The episode I chose was season one; episode eight, which first aired in 2005, titled ‘Natural Born Killer’.
There are various types of music and it’s a unique word with countless meanings. Music is simply defined as the science or art of ordering tones or sounds in succession, in combination, and in temporal relationships to produce a composition having unity and continuity, vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody or harmony (www.merrium-Webster.com). Even though I enjoy listening to a diversity of musical selections by numerous artists, the music that inspires me the most is GOSPEL music. To me, gospel music or music in general, is a melody that consists of a linear sequence of tones and harmony. The power of music with the expression of tempo and rhythm, can inspire, entertain and change the mood of an individual. Nevertheless, not only is the tempo crucial, but the lyrics play a major role in whether I like the song or not.
Two men with two different ways of life are connected through a time period and these two words: determination and dedication. Erik Larson does a great job developing these two characters in The Devil in the White City. On one hand, Daniel Burnham is trying to build the world’s fair in Chicago, on the other H.H. Holmes is a dedicated doctor who is determined to open a hotel for the world 's fair. Burnham is determined and works diligently to get the job done, and he won’t stop for any reason. Holmes driven dedication towards this isn’t for the common reason of making money, but instead he wants to create a safe place that he can murder people. The major difference is that Burnham choose the better path, so he was able to help others in the process. Burnham gave a blank canvas to so many inventors and creators, so that they could change the way things are viewed in the world. These two men show the opposite ends of the spectrum, which is why we have different results caused by their determination and dedication.
Contemporary Christian music (CCM) is the genre of choice of most worship leaders for youth retreats, Christian camps, Sunday morning worship, and Wednesday night Bible groups. The purpose of the selected arrangements is to draw out the "spirit of worship" and "open the eyes of our hearts". While I have no doubt that worship leaders all over the U.S. have the purest intentions, they have missed the mark on this. Is it just me, or haven't they played "Our God is and Awesome God" a million times already? Yes they have.
Music offers a soundtrack for life. It has the power to, "to elevate the mind, body and character of individuals and the spirit of the nation as a whole" (Suisman 19). Along with its profound effect on people, music is also derived from endless sources and contains an infinite number of messages and purposes within its given context. Musical genres are often created to standalone as their own entity, but songs are also sometimes intended to represent multiple influences and alternate styles. As exemplified through the examination of various musical genres, their origins and their historical implications, a persisting influence relates to either the stylistic inspiration from other cultures, ethnicities and musical styles or the blatant conflict

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:1,27) These two passages from the Bible showing the beginning of the earth describe the power of God and what He gave mankind. This creation began the reason for worshiping God. Because of Him, people needed to sing and give praise for the greatness that God has done. The purpose of this worship began as personal expression of passion for God, and has continued in this purpose. But the music has also transitioned to aide man in a desperate pursuit of God. In this essay, the purpose of worship music to man will be discussed through stating the topics and purpose of the worship throughout time. These times will continue from the beginning, through the Medieval period, all the way to modern day music. Before delving into the objective within the time periods, it primarily needed to examine the reason behind the purpose of this music.
