Introductory Paragraph: There are very few differences between the Book and the Film of To Kill A Mockingbird. But one of the few differences that you can’t miss is in the film there are several characters that were never introduced such as Mr.Dolphus Raymond, Aunt Alexandria, Uncle Jack, Miss Caroline, Cousin Francis, Miss Gates, and Aunt Rachel. Also in the film they left out some scenes such as the scene where it snows in Maycomb and Miss Maudie 's house burns down. A few similarities in both the novel and the film, first similarity is that Scout Finch is the narrator in both. Another key similarity is the story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. Setting: In the film and the novel some key details that help establish the time and place it took place would be that there are still slaves and a lot of racism. For example Atticus has cook or a slave named Calpurnia. Also in the film you can tell it is from the mid 1900’s because there are cars shown in the film. Another thing that establishes the time it took place is the type of clothing they wore which adds to the movie because it helps to tell the time period when the movie takes place. Another way the director of the film and the author of the book showed me when a time change occurred was by the meals they were eating whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. My last way of knowing when time changes occurred was when the kids when to school that showed me it was morning. Also words like goodnight let me know that it is night time. Neither the novel nor film version of To Kill A Mockingbird is superior to the other, just different. In the book you delve more into the separate characters while in the film you see the relationships in action. The book gives you a broader view of everything, but at the same time the movie points out everything that seems important. Lastly, the novel shows Scout as a girl caught in the middle, when the movie seems to paint Scout as a girl without a inkling of what is going on.
To begin with, there are many similarities between the book and movie To Kill A Mockingbird. For example, Tom Robinson died in an attempt to escape from prison in both the book and the movie. In my opinion Tom's death was crucial to the original story, and I believe the movie would have been seen as over-sentimental if the scriptwriters had let him live. Another important similarity between the book and movie, is the mutual fascination between Arthur Radley and the children. Arthur, or Boo as the children called him, left them gifts such as dolls, a watch, and chewing gum in the hollow of a tree in his yard. The children made expeditions to the Radley house to look in the window just so they could catch a glimpse of Boo Radley. I believe this captivation was important to the story line because it was the main foundation of the children's imagination. A big part of the story was imagining Boo to be some kind of freak that came out at night to eat cats and squirrels. An additional similarity between the book and movie is the respect showed to Atticus by the African American community of Maycomb. They respected him for his courage, which by his definition meant, "It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."(112). I think the mutual respect between the African Americans and Atticus was important not only to Atticus, but also to his children. Their father and the sad story and memories of Tom Robinson taught them the wrongs of racism. I think if the movie producers had taken out the good relationship between Atticus and the African Americans, it would be taking away one of the most important themes of the story. There are many other significant similarities between the book and the movie.

To say both the book and the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird were closely related would be an understatement. Though neither was better or worse, the movie and the book were completely different. Minor differences between the movie and the book include one being easy to read due to narration, and one moving too fast causing the story to be rather predictable. Major differences that changed the whole viewpoint of the story consist of missing characters and characters perceived differently, important scenes left out, and the different was the book and the movie represent the characters and relationships. Overall, the book represents two children trying to enjoy their childhood while becoming good people in the process and the movie is based around a wrongful trial of a black man in the South. Although, when you read this, you can learn the language, culture and time of the 1960’s. The book seems to have a slow pace but the timestamp of the book makes the reader addicted. Bare in mind, this isn’t Star Wars, To Kill A Mockingbird has a slow feel but gets the reader at the edge of their seat. For example, Jem and Scout find clay dolls of themselves in a random knot hole of a tree in their neighborhood. Scenes like this makes the reader feel like they can’t stop reading.
