The songs “Love Story” by Taylor Swift and “Starcrossed” by Ash reference
Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. Because of the songwriters’ attitudes toward “Romeo and Juliet”, “Love Story” portrays the play in a more positive way than “Starcrossed”. “Love Story” by Taylor Swift Emphasizes the positive parts of “Romeo and Juliet” by focusing on the beginning of the story and changing the end of the story, and emphasizing the theme of true love. The lines “I’m standing there, on a balcony in summer air. See the lights; see the party, the ball gowns.” explain only the beginning of the story, when Romeo meets Juliet and they find “true love”. This makes the play seem less tragic than it actually is because the beginning of “Romeo and Juliet” is much happier than the end, when Romeo and Juliet die. “You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess It’s a love story, baby, just say ‘yes’” focuses on the theme of true love by comparing “Romeo and Juliet” to a fairy tale where Romeo is the prince and Juliet is the princess.
