Autism vs. Schizophrenia
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia are two disorders that occur during childhood. The two disorders are so similar, that most children are misdiagnosed and mistreated for their illness. ASD and schizophrenia both share social imparities that cause them to seem different to others. (2017) Comparing both ASD and schizophrenia will see the similarities and differences between two childhood disorders and why they would be mistaken for one another. There are many similarities between both ASD and schizophrenia, but there is also a lot of differences as well.

Some similarities between them are, both autism and schizophrenia can be diagnosed early in a child’s life, they both have the same early symptoms: language delays, late or unusual crawling, late walking, and other abnormal actions like rocking or flapping their arms; they both can affect the development of a child’s mental wellbeing, and both are cognitive disorders (Mash, pp. 156-194). With autism and schizophrenia being so much a like it has been hard over the years for the doctors to tell them apart in a young child, because the more server symptoms of schizophrenia do not occur until their adolescent years. This cause mistreatment of the child, which can cause long term affects on their health. Another similarity between autism and schizophrenia is that they both have social dysfunctions. Both disorders cause an individual to act differently in a social setting. (Mash, pp. 156-194) For example; a child with schizophrenia might feel paranoid always, like someone is watching them or wanting to hurt them, so they would look around the room and want to leave as soon as possible, they would act very differently at Walmart than a child with no mental disorder. Another example would be a child with autism is at an arcade with his or her parents and suddenly one of the games makes a loud noise and the child panics and screams, which causes everyone in the arcade to look at them and cause a seen. Frist, autism is almost always diagnosed in the early years of a child, while it is very uncommon for schizophrenia to be diagnosed in a child under the age of 13 (Mandell, 2017). Secondly, autism affects how a child read or picks up on social cues, and children with schizophrenia can read social cues, but can’t help their hallucinations and delusions. Throughout the years the diagnosis of autism has changed dramatically. Once, it was mistakenly diagnosed as childhood schizophrenia. Now that much more extensive research has been done, researchers have found distinct characteristics that are typical of autistic individuals.
While there are common characteristic with autism, individuals with Aspergers syndrome have fewer issues with talking and are regularly of normal, or above normal, intelligence. They do not typically have the accompanying inabilities associated with autism, however they may have particular learning difficulty. These may incorporate dyslexia and dyspraxia or different conditions, for example, consideration deficiency hyperactivity issue (ADHD) and epilepsy. Asperger’s is one disorder of many in the Autism Spectrum. The Autism Spectrum includes early infantile autism, childhood autism, Kanner’s autism, high-functioning autism, atypical autism, pervasive developmental disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Asperger’s (“American Psychiatric Association,” 2013). All disorders found in the spectrum are neurodevelopmental disorders. These types of disorders deal with impairments of development and growth of the brain and nervous system (Lord & Bishop, 2010). Each disorder found in the spectrum may have similarities, but are different from one another too. Asperger’s was not a part of the Autism Spectrum until the latest update of DSM-5 in 2013. It was classified as its own category, but now is an Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD (Macintosh & Dissanayake, 2004). The moving of Asperger’s Syndrome into the Autism Spectrum took place because of the various similarities to ASDs.

Finally the category of interests and play include : unusual focus on pieces, preoccupation on certain topics, a need for the same routine, and stereotyped behaviors like hand flapping and body rocking.

Autism is characterized as a developmental disorder that is seen in children by the age of three years old. Autism affects the brains normal, natural development, and causes many impairments. The major impairments that affect an individual are reciprocal socialization, Qualitative impairment in communication, and repetitive or unusual behavior. Signs of Autism can be seen in early infanthood, with proper awareness and resources. An infant child can appear to be adverse to eye contact early on. Some signs in early infancy appear as being indifferent to affection and physical contact. When spoken to, they can appear to be deaf or ignoring the parent or caregiver. Noticing the early red flags of Autism can provide an early intervention and give the child the best chance at learning to tolerate their environment. Some people used medication to treat it. Others used punishments to deal with this problem. Behavioral therapy was started during the 1980 and 1990 to treat Autism.
