Balancing Life and School Tiffany Schenck Rasmussen College Author Note This paper is being submitted on December 15, 2016, for Amy Kirsch’s Dimensions of Nursing Practice course. Balancing Life and School In order to enhance functioning, it is necessary to find a balance between the various roles one plays. As a student, I wear many different hats. I am a partner, worker, friend, classmate, and many other things. Often times these roles are in a war with one another. As a student I must be proficient and evaluate my priorities. By using the Balancing School and Life - My Quality of Life Self-Care Plan, it can set a framework and a plan to maintain wellness and to stay motivated and engaged throughout my program (Napoli, M., …show more content…
Students often prioritize academics at the expense of personal factors, including relationships and exercise. This can lead to a failure in academic performance, as general health and well-being are critical to optimal academic functioning. The quality of your relationships can determine the health of your school and life balance. A large focus on academics can cause conflict in personal relationships and can minimize your sense of support. Likewise, a preoccupation with relationship issues at the expense of academics or work issues can be detrimental to performance, which can put further strain on the individual and the relationship. Finding ways to integrate school and personal life is essential. Time management is a key factor to academic and professional success for myself. It is an important skill that will help me to concentrate my efforts on what is most important. I need to plan out my schedule, make a weekly to-do lists, prioritize my work, set goals and deadlines for my projects, avoid perfectionism and really assess the amount of time I …show more content…
It can cause a feeling of being constantly pressured, hassled, and hurried and irritability and moodiness. To relieve my stress I need to come up with a plan to alleviate it. I plan to exercise on a regular basis to keep stress levels under control. I will learn ways to relax my body through meditation and surround myself around the ones who make me laugh. I will be positive and remember that this too shall pass. I will make the best out of these stressful circumstances and be optimistic. My outlook, attitude, and thoughts influence the way I see things and enhance my performance every day. As I continue to get further along in the nursing program, my life will become more stressful and my availability to my work, personal life and children will be decreased. By continually looking back at this Balancing School and Life - My Quality of Life Self-Care Plan, I can be reminded of my priorities and how I plan to succeed. In fact, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family” (Annan,
...the work, personal, and social life context, can promote or impede their learning” (247). This statement is true because if these activities continue to impede the learning of a student then he or she will get stressed out, which could result in the student dropping all his or her college classes. If the student could just sit back and analyze the situation, life would be easier. For example, the student could reduce the number of classes he or she takes every semester. Reducing the amount of classes could result in more time spending with family rather than doing homework. When thinking of a person whose life is filled with frustrating duties and activities remember a nontraditional college students’ schedule of completing activities of school, working long hours, completing personal activities, and trying to spend free time with family and friends all in one day.
These non-traditional students must particularly strive to prepare themselves for the added expectations of college. This small segment of the population, those attempting to maintain a job, raise a family, and attend school, is the segment most susceptible to depression, according to a recent medical study (Voelker 2177). The study recommends that students attempting to manage the multiple responsibilities brought about by this situation maintain a strict schedule. The study also found that those with the greatest support system, or who have the support of individuals such as the employer or spouse, were more successful in their educational endeavors.
Time management is important for your personal life and career success. It teaches you how to manage your time effectively and make the most of it.
Students have many concerns when entering university including making new friends, meeting academic requirements and financial concerns (Gibney, Moore, Murphy & O’Sullivan, 2010). These can all be a source of stress and to adjust to university successfully, the student must learn to manage stressors. If they cannot do this they are more likely to experience psychological distress and have a low academic performance. Students who experience more stress tend to have worse health. Therefore, the ability to handle stress is important. As mentioned above, self-esteem increases the ability to manage stress as the belief in your ability to overcome the stressor is increased. Social support also enables students to manage stress better (Friedlander, Reid, Shupak & Cribbie, 2007). Some students may experience more stress than other students because they experience more challenges at university because of their background and previous
I’ll begin with some obvious solutions to time management. First off I am going to name the most used solution, make a plan. When you plan out what your going to do, how your going to do it, and when your going to do each step of it, things become much easier to accomplish. Planning is essential to a productive workday or a completed job. Planning begins right away. When you get your assignment or job to do. You must plan how you are going to make time to accomplish this job.
Time management is a skill which helps you achieve your goals and is essential both in and out of the workplace. Good time management enables you to do the following:
Adults repeatedly refer to their high school as the “best four years of your life” with students cheering on their favorite football team, bright eyed couples in the hallway, and friends spending time together. However, this generation of students experience so much pressure to do well in school that their worlds revolve around their grades and extra circulars. Along with the increased workload, high schools in 2014 have placed an enormous amount of pressure on admission to colleges and standardized testings. As a result, severe depr ession caused by stress has greatly increased among high school students today. Organizational change should be made to schools to decrease the anxiety of college admission and workload as well as addressing mental health issues; by adjusting their curriculums and excluding high stake tests, schools can reduce stress on students and, as a direct result, decrease depression rates.
There are many different parts to time management, such as procrastination, strategy, organization, expectations and being prepared. All of them contribute equally in many ways. All of the things that we have spoken about in this paper are highly recommended. The best thing to do when it comes to time management is to set a strategy, become organized and do your best to avoid procrastination. When you manage your time make sure you include the following; studying, sleeping, eating, relaxing and other necessary things. No matter what our circumstances are, we can all use some time management skills in our lives.
The ability of students to excel in their academic pursuit is dependent on several factors including availability of materials, being in the right frame of mind, healthy and being able to cope with academic stressors. Literature has shown that performance in school, college, or university was found to be affected by many symptoms of depression, such as difficulties in concentration, lack of interest and motivation, preoccupations, fatigability, and poor attendance (Fine & Carlson, 1992). The wellbeing of students is very important as it has been argued that a sound mind lives in a healthy body, thereby highlighting the essence of students’ wellbeing. In line with WHO’s definition of health as “a complete state of physical, mental and social
Life in college requires one to have mastery in balancing his or her activities. Juggling between an endless list of activities like attending classes, finding time to go the library, doing assignments, sitting for cats, watching your favorite TV programs and adventures while one is still young poses a major dilemma to most students given that we only have only 24 hours a day which is significantly insufficient to be top of all these activities.
Each individual possesses individual strengths and weaknesses when it comes to school, work, as well as life in general. It is important to be able to be able to identify those weaknesses in order to work on strengthening them, which ultimately will lead to lessening of the negative effects that influence daily life. For me personally, with nursing school, work, homework, family, friends, and other daily stressors, I struggle to adequately manage it all. Specifically when looking at how I manage my time, as well as how I manage my stress levels, I see a correlation with very negative effects. I am going to work on
People often neglect the importance that a healthy lifestyle has on their success academically. Most research studies suggest that effort put forth by parents' involvement is what predicts a student's academic success, despite the effort expended by either teachers or the students themselves (Paul, 2012). Although parents' involvement is crucial to students’ academic achievement, a healthy lifestyle is the foundational aspect of academic success. Ultimately, this research, which investigates the impacts of healthy lifestyle on students' success, may encourage college students to participate in a healthy lifestyle in order to ensure proper brain development and higher grade point averages.
High school can be very tough for some students. Assignments, tests, social life and maintaining a healthy life style can be very exhausting. Even though, you have so much going on during these four years, you need to stay focused and also take care of yourself as these years will determine your future. Being successful in high school doesn’t only mean getting good grades, during these years a student doesn’t only learn in the class room but learns to build his character outside of the class room. At this age it is also important to be active and eat healthy. Managing all these things can be overwhelming but it is not impossible. If you want to be successful, you have to follow a routine to balance your school work, extracurricular activities and a healthy lifestyle.
Time is extremely important in our life. It helps to stay organized and in formation of our daily activities. Generally time management means forming a good scheduled workable habit which will to increase our efficiency and productivity in a day-to-day life. In this rapidly changing world, life is often what happens to our-self along the way that what we have planned otherwise there is always wasting of time in our life that we pushed our-self off the track. Time management has the most important aspects in our life, it has the ability to plan and control how we spend time to effectively execute our priorities. Time management is doing the right things in a time. In our lives there are some seven important areas like Health,
In my world a good college student is a student who has a good health both physically and mentally. Most students tend to forget their health when they come to college and they invented something called the “freshman 15,” which means students tend to gain extra 15 pounds when they come to college because they forget to exercise. I avoided this by excising every day, play basketball which was fun for me and watching what I ate. The other problem I had to watch out for was stress. According to VanKim Nicole, and Toben F.Nelson who are from the division of Epidemiology and community health, school of public health reported that most teens who go to college “4,8%” said that they were experiencing “poor mental health and depression” due to things like tests and “social lives.” This is true even for me but I found ways to reduce this by either taking walks at night with some friends or just mediating by myself in a quiet room. This has helped me concentrate on school and my social life without become stressed out.
