Comparing Essay 'Racial Identities And Our Time'

In the essay's “Racial Identities” by Kwame Anthony Appiah and “Our Time” by John Edgar Wideman, the author's discuss their viewpoints based on the similarities in today's society. In ”Racial Identities,” Appiah is describing how society views people by putting them in certain race, religion and social categories. However, in “Our Time” Wideman approaches the topic by trying to figure out how people who were raised together with the same values and upbringing, turn out to be the complete opposite's as they grew older. Appiah stated “Once the racial label is applied not only does it have social effects but psychological ones as well and they shape the ways people conceive themselves.” (44) In Wideman's essay Robby reacts to that quote exactly. The fact that his friend Garth passed away, due to how the White people “doctors” let him rot away until he died. Robby choose to live his life by committing crimes and using drugs based on his society. Robby was struggling to find his own identity. He could have easily chose to live his life differently like his brother john and make something of himself, but he let the streets lifestyle take over his entire life. Another similarity between the two is that Appiah said “We make up selves from a tool kit of options made available by our culture and society. We do make choices, but we do not determine the options among the choices we choose.” (51) Based on Wideman's “Our Time” Robby did not have too many options based on his society. Yes he did make choices and they may have not been the cleverest but because of the society he affiliated himself with he did not have many choices to choose from. It was either stay and end up just like them or get out and live life like John
