Choice and Responsibility in Death of a Salesman, Young Goodman Brown, and No Exit
Sartre and his existentialist philosophy have been subjects of curiosity for me for years. Only recently, after taking a philosophy class, have I begun to grasp some of the major principals of existentialism. Though I'm unsure about some of the peripheral arguments and implications of existentialism, the core of the system appeals strongly to me: Human beings are themselves the basis of values and meaning, and in this sense values are real--evolving, developing, and real. Existentialism places the individual at the center of things, gives him a sense of empowerment and responsibility, and erects a bridge on which Man can find his way out of many of

Orestes commits two murders and is exiled from his rightful kingdom, barely escaping with his life. What is enviable about him? Orestes possesses a certain mental and emotional freedom at the end of the play that other fictional characters (and even real people) have not attained in far less dire circumstances. Orestes is a testament to the power of the individual to determine for himself what he will do, and why, without allowing others to direct his actions or his responses. He is the supremely inner-directed individual, taking responsibility for his acts, and thereby taking control of his whole life. In today's world, where people commonly feel disenfranchised and powerless, Orestes' personal reality is an enviable …show more content…
Some might call it egotistical to base one's actions on an internal scale of values but, to me, it seems that I am the only thing in this world I have any control over; therefore, my self must be the source and basis of my resources. Such a view protects me from outer circumstances, as it did for Orestes after the murders, because he found a free path through others' condemnations and judgments. This was precisely Electra's failure: she lacked the courage to believe in and trust herself and so fell victim to the judgments of others. Such was also the case with Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown." Though Goodman Brown caught a glimpse of a reality his community strove to deny, he lacked the courage and faith in himself to pursue this discovery and eventually replace his lost illusions of the community's values with a perception of reality and a value system that was uniqu! e to himself. He couldn't find within himself the strength necessary to take the next step, from disillusion to freedom, that Orestes and Biff were able to find. Biff's brother, Happy, is a final example of someone who couldn't, or wouldn't, break away from the safe harbor of conformity and test himself in the open seas of

In his lecture, Existentialism is a Humanism, Jean-Paul Sartre discusses common misconceptions people, specifically Communists and Christians, have about existentialism and extentanitalists (18). He wants to explain why these misconceptions are wrong and defend existentialism for what he believes it is. Sartre argues people are free to create themselves through their decisions and actions. This idea is illustrated in the movie 13 Going on Thirty, where one characters’ decision at her thirteenth birthday party and her actions afterwards make her become awful person by the time she turns thirty. She was free to make these decisions but she was also alone. Often the idea of having complete free will at first sounds refreshing, but when people

An icon for decades, legend for an eternity, Michael Jackson 's impact on the world continues to thrive as a silhouette amongst pop culture. His music has influenced many people to "Xscape" from the deceptions of all the "Dirty Diana[s]." Yet, his talent has encouraged people to "Scream" through all the "Thriller[s]" they receive as his stardom illuminates the stage as the "Smooth Criminal" of performances. His songs vary from selections that you can "Jam" to, those that promote tough love and adornment, while some are advocates for equality. Jackson is and will remain one of the most profound superstars of his time and one of most dynamic artist in "HIStory."
Introduction: Perhaps no one has received this title in history “the king of pop”, now a days many artist’s have arisen and have performed but not as the king of pop known worldwide and in history, has dominated the world of pop as Michael Jackson.
Man goes through life, waking each day and participating in his own existence without truly existing. He is always in search of a greater meaning, and in the process fails to find one as he is on a constant search for something that cannot be grasped by the normality that is the human psyche. A similar example can be found in the capitalistic work force of modern day. Man works the majority of his life, always training and aiming for more, only to retire and live on a portion of what he was making. During his time working he lost out on his family, his sleep, often times his own enjoyment, for an ideal that often times is never achieved. This is a trivial situation, yet it is painted in a rather angelic light in our society. Why is it, then, that Sartre can be dismissed as trivial when trivialities exist in nearly every day to day life? Quite likely, this is because Existentialism is an “on-paper theory” so to speak, and in theory is looks quite differently than in reality. Man, as in this case, does not realise that he often follows the rules which he opposes. In addition, much of today’s society exists under a form of organized religion, a society with which Existentialism exists in
Probably top 3 in my all time favorite trilogies list (stay tuned for that one!), this is a soundtrack that actually sounds adventurous. This one goes out to all the whip wielding, snake hating, gun toting archaeologists out there.
Labor Day began in the 1800s as a way to go against long working hours and no time off. These problems seem to be coming back today.
At a young age, a boy by the name of Michael Joseph Jackson becomes a mega pop star. With his afro, short stature, and big brown eyes, Michael's talent at singing makes crouds scream his name and the people of the world cannot get enough of him. Although he loves his talent, his career as an artist deters him from finishing grade school. Being away from his childhood friends, and on tour all the time, Michel is left without a childhood until he feels the need to regain it later on his life. After years of being on tour with the Jackson Five and now almost twenty, Michael is compelled to redeam his childhood. He becomes increacingly more interested in children, and belives he is a life like Peter Pan. Although his compassion for children is on the rise, so is his career as a solo artist. Michel releases more albums until Micheal Jackson becomes a house hold name. By the Early 90's he is at the peak of his career, but things have changed physically and emotionally. Now, he is much more pale and not the small black child with an afro anymore. People have become increacingly more aware of his obsession of children and suspitious of this behavior. Although Michael looks past these things, people still reconize the pop star they have always seen in him. It wasn't until an incident in the early 90's that his secret broke. Micheal Jackson, the beloved pop star of the 80's is caught for child melestation and is labeled a petifile. Although many people boo the star, Micheal still manages to contain his integraty as a pop legend in the end and he still loves children just as he did before. On his "Neverland Ranch" Michel still envites thousands of children to play and have fun.
Another reasons why I like him is that I am interested in his behaviors. There are always some topics around him. For example, he was under suspicion he treated a little boy cruelly, who was ten years old and Michael's best friend. Michael insisted on his innocence, but he paid 26 million dollars for reconciliation finally. Though he asserted he paid just to settle the commotion, people said he admitted he was guilty. Moreover, it is said that Michael has the longing to be a white, though he said in a TV program he suffered from the disease that pigment in his skin decolorized. When I saw these news, I considered the problems about child-abuse and human race. How does child-abuse hurt the child's heart? His or her hurt will not disappear forever. Which human race is inferior or superior?
