Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher and is credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Callicles was an ancient Athenian political philosopher who argued with Socrates on many topics including the topic of self-discipline. Callicles saw self-control and discipline as an obstacle to happiness and a good life. Socrates argued against Callicles saying that self-control and discipline are essential to happiness and the good life.
