Showcasing the God of War, Mars who is also known as the lover of Venus, the Goddess of Love. While Mars is displayed asleep and unarmed, Venus is awake and alert. The contrast between the two subjects illustrates the paintings meaning, love conquers all (The National Gallery of London). Seeing as though, Venus was considered to the epitome of beauty, the painting correlates with the traditional rule of illustrating ideal beauty in art. The painting showcases many of the rules involving traditional art by illustrating society’s focus on ideal beauty, providing a moral lesson of love conquers all, was made to last, and was create by the artist’s hand. In addition to following all of these rules, the painting created during the Italian Renaissance the artwork signifies society’s emphasis of the rebirth of classical ideas. Reflection of classical themes surrounding the depictions of Greek deities and human beings was popular. The painting embodies the representation of the Greek Gods telling a story of human expression. A reflection of society’s new interests and priorities is displayed.
