Characters are often tricky to understand. In some stories, they tend to be very static and stay the same. In other stories, authors tend to develop their characters to make them much more interesting and help them evolve while the reader gets to know them. In the two stories “A Jury of Her Peers” and “Two Kinds” both authors bring out life changing events that cause the characters to shift their personalities dramatically. With this information we can look for life changing aspects in each story. In the story Two Kinds by Amy Tan, the main character, Jing Mei is a very straight and narrow character. Her personality much reflects the wishes of her mother. Jing Mei is a “future child prodigy” and her mother expects the best out of her. While Jing Mei is young, she listens to her mothers’ every whim and desire. It is known that in Asian households, the parents take great pride in their child’s life. …show more content…

In the short story A Jury of Her Peers written by Susan Glaspell the characters changed with the hope of evolving before the reader. One character who changes throughout the story is Mrs. Peters. Mrs. Peters is the wife of the local sheriff who is rather subservient to her husband, Mr. Hale. Throughout the story you notice her trying to overcome the subservient nature and help to hide the truth on Minnie Wright’s guilt. Mrs. Hale states in the story, “When I was a girl, my kitten – there was a boy took a hatchet, and before my eyes – and before I could get there – “ this is when you notice a shift in her character. Before, Mrs. Peters was all about letting the men in the story take over and even let them belittle the women’s instincts and ability to find evidence. After the aforementioned quote, you saw a new side to her. Mrs. Peters was much more open to the idea of concealing the bird with the twisted neck to hide the fact that Minnie Wright did indeed kill her
