The storyline of the Hero’s Journey has appeared in many different ways throughout literature for centuries. The Hero’s Journey is a famous plot line that exceedingly all literature follows. It is the series of steps that a hero usually follows in his/her adventure where the main purpose of the hero is to defeat his/her greatest fear and return with an accolade. In this epic journey, there are twelve steps and nearly all literature includes most of them. The Odyssey by Homer and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins are both based on The Hero’s Journey. Conversely, they interpret this journey in their very own different ways. This is the next step in The Hero’s Journey that follows arriving in the new land and in this step, the hero meets someone who becomes his/her mentor. This character guides, helps, and teaches the hero to be able to successfully defeat the antagonist. On page 168, the author of The Hunger Games wrote, “There’s someone out there who wants to buy me water only Haymitch is refusing to let it go through. As my mentor, he gets to control the flow of gifts from the sponsors.” Katniss was assigned Haymitch as her mentor and he is supposed to help her survive in the Hunger Games. However, at this part of the adventure, he hasn’t began supporting her very much. Homer wrote on pages 1064 and 1065 in The Odyssey, “We made land, put ram and ewe ashore, and took our way along the Ocean stream to find the place foretold for us by Circe.” Circe is Odysseus’ mentor and she used to be his lover. Therefore, she is helping him get back to his home on Ithaca, where his family is waiting for him.
