As one goes through their day they are constantly taking in new information, and reshaping their world. They form their own reality based on their facts emotions and morals however, some people 's reality are closer to actual reality than others. The closer one’s reality is to Reality the more accurately they perceive the world. And one’s perception of the world determines their actions and their reactions to those around them. The Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and Oedipus Rex by Sophocles both deal with characters who live in a skewed reality and how this determines their actions. Reality is hinged on facts, emotions and morals. If Reality is a house, facts are the foundation, emotions are the walls, and morals are the roof. Facts trigger responses from people, they are black and white. Oedipus killed Laius. Willy commits suicide. These are the non-negotiables. People then chose their reactions from these facts. Then emotions kick in they regulate the inflow of information and our mood changes as different information comes in. Unlike Willy who only had problems with seeing reality later in life, Oedipus spent the majority of his life living in a false reality. It starts with his birth in Thebes when ,due to a prophecy, he was sentenced to death. Instead he was given to Polybus by a shepherd and was raised as his son. Years later not knowing that he was adopted he left Corinth so a “shameful prophecy” (Sophocles 45) would never come true. That is so that he would never kill his father and marry his mother. As he traveled though, he killed his birth father and married his birth mother, Jocasta, a fact that would not be discovered till years later.
