Eerie, emotional pain, an unbearable sadness. When a person loses someone dear to his or her heart, these feelings of pain are the only feelings being felt. How a person recovers from a loss is truly up to him or her and his or her mindset. In the novel, Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks and short story “The Love of My Life” by T. Coraghessan Boyle, the underlying themes deal with falling in and out of love and dealing with the loss. Because love and loss are parts of human nature, they are difficult to control how people respond to them; often times they can come with consequences. Love can range from a variety of different feelings; most are feelings of personal affection and pleasure. Often, love can cause a strong personal attachment, both mentally and physically. In a recent article from “Psychology Today”, Dr. Deborah Anapol stated, “Love is inherently free. It cannot be bought, sold, or traded. You cannot make someone love you, nor can you prevent it. The love that Russell has before losing Vivian is pure love that is strengthened by the birth of his daughter, London. Russell states that his “love grew so much more each and everyday” after the birth (Sparks 7). When Russell describes his love in a deeper sense, he notes that “I adored her, I already knew, but already, the thought of life without her struck me as inconceivable” (Sparks 4). On the same note, his provides the reader with a brief foreshadow as to which female in Russell’s life means more to him at this point and where his true love belongs. Russell observed them and compared their physical attributes and mental states to the most beautiful objects in the world too. In the novel by Sparks, Russell states that London’s smile “was a real smile, as true as the sunrise, and when she emitted an unexpected giggle, the already brilliant start to my day was suddenly made a thousand times better” (Two by Two 4). By comparing London’s smile to a sunrise, Russell shows how his daughter instantly can brighten up his mood and the love he has for her never reflects any sort of negativity in his mind. She is the most beautiful part of his day and can make it better with just her innocent smile and childish giggle. Russell
