The reform movement running from late through the early 20th century was referred to as the progressivism. The progressives transformed and reformed America in various ways. Thomas West and William Schambra in their article “The Progressive Movement and the Transformation of American Politics” seek to discuss the impact, limits and legacy that progressivism had on America. The progressives aimed at tackling the problems facing people during that era ranging from social, economic, cultural, political, constitutional and education to name a few. All these posed great differences and approaches also differed by many different people who also viewed themselves as progressives. However, according to Thomas West and William Schambra “While the Progressives differed in their assessment of the problems and how to resolve them, they generally shared in common the view that government at every level must be actively involved in these reforms. The existing constitutional system was outdated and must be made into a dynamic, evolving instrument of social change, aided by scientific knowledge and the development of administrative bureaucracy.” The progressives campaigned for the old system to be more open and democratic.
