Compare And Contrast The Matrix And The Allegory Of The Cave

In comparing the Matrix and The Allegory of the Cave I found that both suggest a life of falsehood which is then changed by the knowledge of a truer reality. In both scenarios you’re described a reality that is deemed normal and remains unquestioned, an existence that if no other options were presented would be continued and accepted till death. In the Matrix everyone is moving about in “life” in the same way we now know our reality to exist, such as interaction with other living organisms, going to work, recreational activities, as well as emotions such as love, anger, hurt and happiness. In the cavern people are lying in the same position with little movement, the human mind is seeking knowledge about its surroundings adapting and identifying …show more content…

In the Matrix the senses are still being activated by a computer and sensory input coincides with their current state of existence. A fuller life is being lived in this form of deception, they are given the ability to interact with others and seek knowledge. When that’s fractured and that reality is exposed of course our inquiring minds will seek answers as human beings we always want to know why something is the way it is. Cypher in the Matrix was given the same option as Neo I assume and wanted to seek out answers when the truer reality seemed more difficult he opted for the previous ignorance is bliss. My belief is that as long as your senses are intact and you’re able to move about in reality gaining knowledge and experience because of it, then that is a sense of bliss. I doubt that if Cypher was in the Matrix blind, deaf and unable to move, yet had these sense abilities in the truer reality would ever consider returning to the Matrix. In the conversation of the cave no alternate reality was being presented just an increase of sense gathering stimulated by different surroundings and the ability to move about. Once released from the cave and this information gathered and sense stimuli activated so to speak I can almost guarantee that this person would never …show more content…

I have never doubted my existence or questioned it as much as I have since I began this course. All of these theories and information I have taken in over these past five weeks have me spinning so to speak. I am going to side with Descartes on this matter “I think therefore I am,” what better way to state your existence. Working in the medical field we have come across a diagnosis called auto activation deficit. These people are not able to initiate thought process they are able to recall memories and respond when asked a question. We say they have a flat affect and it’s true they are very quit and respond oddly compared to say another person without this disorder. Dualism supports this issue though stating the mind has no property of the body rather being influence by it and the body having no awareness of any kind (Hasker, 1983). Being that this is an issue regarding lesions on the brain, and brain being part of the body, which in turn will affect the mind according to dualism, still supports Descartes statement of “I think therefore I am.” These patients are able to think still but that process is affected by the body. I believe without a doubt that we have an essence or sole that was given to us by God along with a body for sensory input to make this life/reality worth living and to guide our pursuit for knowledge. My body forms the necessary means for my sole to maintain and function in this world even if there are
