Comparing the American Civil War with the Marvel Civil War In April of 1861, the American Civil War broke out. In June of 2006, the Marvel Civil War broke out. 145 years of separation still bind these two seemingly unrelated events. The nonfiction and fiction worlds may come across as totally different. One involves actual American heroes fighting over abolition versus slavery and federal versus states’ rights while the other involves fictional American superheroes fighting over freedom versus security, individual rights versus the need for regulation. For starters, Abraham Lincoln and Captain America both share a strong sense of patriotism. While Lincoln wanted to unify the nation whereas Captain America was willing to rebel against the government that he believed was wrong, the two figures venerated individual rights. They also had a strong sense of morals and ethics, a foundation that would become the baseline for their actions. On the contrary, Tony Stark and Jefferson Davis are relatable because they both did the same things, shared similar traits, and had the same quirks. In the Marvel event, Tony Stark used villains to fight for his side and he would then offer them shorter sentences. Also, Stark favored the Act because it signed superheroes to government regulation and oversight. These fictional laws and actions are similar to slavery because they are two things that surrender the rights of the individual, in the most basic terms. These ideas of ownership certainly link the two figures, and they begin to make the case that the two iconic events are similar. There is no concrete evidence to support that claim; maybe it is that many civil wars are similar, or just that Marvel has a tendency to follow factual history in their stories, but 145 years between the historic and written events do not separate the two. After analyzing them thoroughly, they can actually be seen as very similar. The leaders of the factions in both wars share many common attributes, whether it be Abraham Lincoln and Captain America or Jefferson Davis and Tony Stark, and that is just the first way that these two grand incidents are related. The core topics that got each side warring were also very similar, and if the baselines are the same, the rest is bound to follow. Furthermore, the outcomes of the events were actually very similar after careful consideration. Every American History student knows about the American Civil War, and every comic nerd or Marvel fan is familiar with the iconic Civil War series, but the two apparently different topics share more in common than many realize. Conclusively, the American Civil War that took place from 1861-1865 and the Marvel Civil War that took place from 2006-2007 are all in all parallels of each other, whether it be in leading figures, driving issues, or dark
