Humans progress through many different stages of both psychosocial and cognitive development throughout their lifespans. Erikson and Piaget have both developed models that break down this human development into separate stages based on age. Erikson’s stages focus on psychosocial development, which refers to the process of developing relationships with others and important psychological/social milestones throughout life. His theory is made up of eight different stages including trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and integrity vs. despair. The young adult stage is called intimacy vs. isolation and lasts from ages 20-34. This is the stage where people are prepared to share intimate, meaningful relationships and friendships with others. Many people who struggle to develop intimacy during this stage tend to feel extremely isolated and alone. Next, comes the middle adulthood stage (35-64 years). According to Erikson, the generativity vs. stagnation stage is characterized by the individual’s interest in caring for others. Generativity refers to the emotional desire to care for children or the future generation, and stagnation, a concern for one’s own needs and comfort, comes from a failure to do this. Erikson’s last stage begins at 65 years old and is known as the integrity vs. despair stage. People who have lived happy lives tend to develop a sense of integrity and look back on their life with acceptance.
