The Lewis and Clark expedition is when the United States purchased Louisiana from France in the early 1800´s This was known as the Louisiana purchase. Many of Americans did not know much about the land west of the Mississippi River. President Jefferson decided that there should be an exploration crew to go west. So he appointed many of his own private secretaries, Meriweather Lewis as the main leader in charge of the expedition and in charge of finding the appropriate guides for it. Lewis invited his former superior from the army, William Clark, to help him along with the trip. The Lewis and Clark trail was when two men and their crew made a path through our future states: Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon.. and back. Lewis and his crew traveled by river. Today those exact paths cannot be followed because of dams, so the trail is not exact. He served in the United states army from 1794-1801 and was also the Governor of the Louisiana territory from 1807-1809. Lewis was also a personal secretary to President Jefferson. William Clark was born on August 1, 1770. He served for the United States Militia from 1789-1796 and was also the Governor of the Missouri Territory from 1813-1820. Clark was also appointed Brigadier general of the Militia and Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Many other people also accompanied Lewis and Clark, there were about thirty-eight enlisted men and some civilian French boatman. Along the trip, they met a woman by the name of Sacagawea, and she was hired as an interpreter.
