In many works of literature, authors often have a point they are trying to convey. This may be something about religion or politics, for example. In From Walden by Henry David Thoreau and Against Nature by Joyce Carol Oates, both authors are trying to make different claims regarding the topic of nature. Thoreau’s piece speaks more positively of nature whereas Oates’ piece contradicts the romantic views some writers have about nature. In making their claims, both authors utilize different structures to convey clear messages to the reader. She uses narrative, informative and argumentative phrases throughout in her work. The memory about her wading in a creek would be an example of a narrative she uses. “Wading, as a small child, in Tonawanda Creek near our house and afterward trying to tear off, in a frenzy of terror and revulsion, the sticky fat bloodsuckers that had attached themselves to my feet, particularly between my toes.” She uses this structure to recount what had happened to her that day. When she gives the definition of paroxysmal tachycardia she uses an informative structure so that the reader knows what she is talking about. “Paroxysmal tachycardia can be fatal, but rarely; if the heartbeat accelerates to 250-270 beats a minute you’re in trouble, but the average heart attack is about 100-150 beats and mine seemed about average; the trick now was to prevent it from getting worse.” Oates questions the validity of Thoreau’s point of view about nature which would be an example of a argumentative phrase. “Nature: as in Thoreau’s upbeat Transcendentalist mode... Another way of saying, not Nature-in-itself but nature-as-experience.” You can sense Oates sarcastic tone when she uses the word “upbeat” to describe Thoreau’s work.
