Honolulu, Hawaii and Nassau, Bahamas are two very popular tourist destinations. However, in two different oceans, they are both located on an island. The cities each attract tens of thousands of visitors a year. It can difficult to try and decide which place to spend a vacation. I have vacationed in both these places. Honolulu, Hawaii is the best place to travel due to its superior weather, tourist attractions and resorts, and culture. Honolulu, Hawaii and Nassau, Bahamas are both fairly large cities located on islands. Located on Oahu in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Honolulu is the capital of the state of Hawaii. Just southeast of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean, Nassau is located on the island of New Providence, Bahamas. Large buildings and many tourists crowd Honolulu’s downtown area. However, Nassau is a smaller city full of smaller colonial buildings. The climates of Nassau and Honolulu are almost the same. They are both generally warm, sunny places. Hawaiians are of a Japanese descent, so ultimately the food in Honolulu is Japanese or oriental with a lot of seafood. Bahamians, however, are primarily of African descent. They eat predominately shellfish and meat in Nassau. There is a better representation of Polynesian culture in Honolulu than the representation of African culture in Nassau. Honolulu is the superior vacation spot in that there are numerous attractions and activities to do revolving the Polynesian and Hawaiian culture. After visiting the country of Jamaica this past summer, I realized how dissimilar some countries can be from the United States. Jamaica was not unlike the United States in a terrible way, but the disparities made me additionally interested in researching about the beautiful and culture-rich country of Jamaica. Even though the majority of facts about the history and culture of the United States and Jamaica are dissimilar, I was surprised to come across some similarities among these two countries.
In the early stages of North American colonization by the English, the colony of Jamestown, Virginia was founded in 1607 (Mailer Handout 1 (6)). Soon after the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded in 1629 (Mailer Handout 2 (1)). These two colonies, although close in the time they were founded, have many differences in aspects of their lives and the way they were settled. The colonies have a different religious system, economic system, political system, and they have a different way of doing things; whether that be pertaining to making money, practicing religion, or electing governors. These, more than 150, islands create an isolated archipelago totalling in approximately 9940 km2. Since 1840 the Hawaiian Islands have been an escape to a tropical paradise for millions of tourists. People all over the world encounter alluring, romanticized pictures of Hawai'i's lush, tropical vegetation, exotic animals, beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, and fantastical women. This is the Hawai'i tourists know. This is the Hawai’i they visit. However, this Hawai'i is a state of mind, a corporate-produced image existing on the surface. More precisely, it is an aftermath of relentless colonization of the islands' native inhabitants by the United States. These native Hawaiians experience a completely different Hawai'i from the paradise tourists enjoy. No one makes this as clear as Haunani-Kay Trask, a native Hawaiian author. In her book, From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawai'i and through her poetry in Light in the Crevice Never Seen, Trask provides an intimate account of the tourist industry's impact on native Hawaiian culture. She presents a negative perspective of the violence, pollution, commercial development, and cultural exploitation produced by the tourist industry. Trask unveils the cruel reality of suffering and struggling through a native Hawaiian discourse. Most of the world is unaware of this.

There exists clear difference between religions in the two cultures with the Bahamian religion being dominated by the Baptists, Anglicans and the Creole-based traditional religion. However the American religion is more liberalized with Americans embracing many religions that are less known in Bahamas. The American culture customs has major difference with the Bahamian culture. The Bahamian culture is more pronounced with customs than in America. Bahamians are individualistic and do not attach their lifestyles to income but on ethnicity. It is therefore clear that the American and Bahamian culture have clear underlying differences than earlier believed pointing to major variations between the two.
Otherwise, your stomach would be growling until your next one after this! The Hawaiians have developed a unique diet of fish, shellfish, and edible plants. These foods include taro root, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, yams, a fish called mahimahi, and much more. The abundance of edible plants you can find in Hawaiian originally brought by the first Polynesian voyagers and settlers to arrive at Hawaii in ancient times. Later immigrants from Japan, Portugal, China, and The Philippines arrived in Hawaii during the 1800’s as laborers for the sugar plantations, and they brought food from their homeland too. This impacted the Hawaiians’ own cuisine because they started to add parts of the immigrants’ foods to their own like they did with hula. Soon, popular modern dishes were created, like malasadas, saimin, and spam. Malasadas are doughnuts covered in sugar that was inspired by Portuguese sweetbread. Saimin is noodles in a broth mixed with meat, vegetables, and seasoning, created when the Hawaiians were introduced to Asian forms of noodles. Finally, spam is canned meat that has grown very popular with the locals, particularly as spam musubi, a slice of the meat on a block of rice wrapped in seaweed called nori.
