The era of mass information and software at our finger tips, accessible through computers of all shapes and sizes, but are desktops or laptops more beneficial to use for everyday computing needs? With the advancements of modern computers and their components, the average size of computers has shrunk to allow users to have laptops or high powered desktops for everyday use. In comparing which version of computer, desktop or laptop, is better for use by a college student several factors must be looked into including: size/mobility, upgradability, cost, processing power (RAM), memory capacity, video graphics, and cost. Memory, the amount of information that can be stored on a machine, is a key factor for computers. Laptops normally have around 500GB of storage memory with some of the higher end laptops having 1TB of memory. Desktops can have multiple hard drives allowing a desktop to have a much higher memory capacity for a lower upgrade cost than that of a laptop since hard drives do not need to be extremely specific for a desktop. The second key is how well the computer can handle programs which can be measured by the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) in the computer. RAM is what lets computers run several programs at one time or run large programs such as Photoshop. Laptops are normally limited to a max of 16GB of RAM with the average laptop coming with only 4GB of RAM out of the box. Desktops can be wired to have multiple boards and can have a max of 64GB though the cost for such a high amount would most likely be too high for that of a college student. The final key is the graphics card in the computers, graphic cards are what allow computers to play high resolution games or watch movies in extremely high quality. The graphics cards inside of laptops vary by name but have similar ratings and a difficult to upgrade.
