Did you know all women have super powers? Most women are usually underestimated, but they are actually stronger and more courageous than most men. Women have demonstrated their strengths multiple times throughout the past. For example Rosa parks did not fall under the pressure of the man who told her to move to the back of the in order for someone to take her seat. There are two women in particular who stood up to their issues regardless of their setbacks. Antigone and Erin Brockovich were both women who took a stand against the different stereotypes that people have placed on them. They showed how they do not care for the consequences, instead they continued to fight harder to gain respect. Antigone and Erin Brockovich faced adversity but still demonstrated their levels of strength even though the outcome may not be what they expected. Antigone gives a perfect example of not caring for the consequences that she would receive for standing up to authority. She did not care that Creon was the ruler of Thebes, she simply disregarded it.
Erin Brockovich was a women who had three kids and was struggling to provide for them. She had no choice but to go on a search for a job. Erin managed to find a job working with her lawyer. Eventually she had a case that had the potential of turning her life around. Erin had people try to get over on her, including the lawyer she was working with. He set up multiple meetings without her knowing. Erin didn’t let this happen, she marched into the meeting and set the record straight. She was not going to let a man take advantage of her hard work. Other people also tried to take the case from her as well. Erin was so determined to win the case for all the patients she got to know, she didn’t let any obstacle stop her from winning the case. She eventually found the data that she needed to win the case and was able to help the

In the story “Antigone”, Sophocles shows that Creon’s attitude is very angry, making everyone sees him as a tyrant more than as a king. His regard for the laws of the town causes him to abandon most viewpoints, like the laws of the gods, or the rights of the people. He believes that his subjects should obey the laws he has set in place, even if moral or religious beliefs contradict his laws and beliefs. Creon’s idea of a good leader is one who maintains order through violence and fear. More over his arrogant, power-seeking personality prevented him from seeking out advice or listening to his own people.

To begin with, possessing power predisposes one to become pompous. In Antigone, Creon perpetually thought he was superior to everyone else. He believed that he was the best, and because of his authority, Creon thought everything revolved around him. For example, during one part of the play, Haimon informs Creon of his wrongdoing. He tells Creon how the entire state realizes Creon’s fault, and Creon should not punish Antigone for the burial of Polyneices. However, Creon does not succumb. This quote shows Creon’s egotistic character, as he understood the state to be entirely about himself. For over 60 years, Wonder Woman has filled the pages of her magazine with adventures ranging from battling Nazis, to declawing human-like Cheetahs. Her exploits thrilled and inspired many young girls, including Gloria Steinem. Through all of this, she has had to pilot her invisible jet through territories that her male counterparts have never had to. She is constantly pulled in two directions; her stories must be entertaining and non threatening to the male status quo, while simultaneously furthering her as the original symbol of 'Girl Power.' She is praised for being an icon of strength to women everywhere, but chastised for wearing a skimpy costume and tying men up, as if she were no more than a male fantasy. No comic book character has had to endure as much scrutiny as Wonder Woman. That's because Wonder Woman represents an entire gender, at a time of important social flux. Although she was created by a man to influence a male audience, Wonder Woman has evolved into an important symbol of the feminist movement.
“Make these excuses, I will heap/ The earth over my brother’s body” (63). Although no one would help her, Antigone took a stand against injustice and honored her brother by burying him, even though Creon said this act would be punishable by death if anyone committed this act of insubordination. Especially in the age that Antigone lived in, it was considered foolish to simply go against a man’s orders, let alone the Kings. Not to mention that Antigone was related to the King, making the situation even worse. She committed a supremely precarious action, especially for a woman. Not only does she bravely follow her morals, but she does a great job of justifying them in her arguments. Antigone was a civil disobedient by disobeying Creon’s orders and accepting the consequences, but she did a great job of justifying them through her arguments throughout Antigone.
Antigone’s opinions are distinctive as she clearly states her beliefs to Creon after being caught for performing her brother’s burial rituals. Antigone strongly believes that law has no validity when laid by a human as she questions Creon saying, “What laws? I never heard it was Zeus who made that announcement” (Antigone 450). This quote shows her reliance on the Gods for moral direction instead of the kings who reign over her. Although she disregards the law, she also accepts punishment; Antigone is able to follow her opinions and independently rule herself, yet also recognize the societal expectations of law and accept punishment. When being taken by Creon with her sister Antigone takes the responsibility of the crime all herself and recognizes what she did despite not being ashamed of it. One of the main views of Antigone that causes her disobedience is the belief that rulers should not keep loved ones from each other. Antigone clearly states, “He has no right to keep me from my own” this shows how she believes the connection between family overpowers that of a law passed by a vengeful king (Antigone 48). Antigone’s opinions contrast to those of Creon who is a gender biased ruler who sees women as lesser as he states “I will not be ruled by a woman” (Antigone 24). Wanting to show his sense of power, he refuses to back down in fear of losing his position. His stubbornness grows stronger as Antigone continues to disobey his commands. Antigone’s strong and steady foundation helps her show defiance. She is able to overcome the opinions of the people and commit to helping her brother regardless of the after effects. She ignores what everyone says and does only as she wants. She is powerful, both physically and mentally, and is successful in her tasks. Antigone matures into a commendable and respectable character in which she depicts her rebelliousness and bravery, pride and tolerance, and sense of moral righteousness to demonstrate fundamental character development in the play.
In Antigone, Sophocles suggests there is no basis for political authority: that Creon's citizens obey him out of fear of the consequences of disobedience. Ismene's obeys his edict is because she fears death. The soldier reports the attempted burial of Polyneices and brings the captured Antigone to Creon to "save his own sweet skin." The chorus believes no one would risk death out of political or moral or religious objectives. Antigone utterly rejects the authority of Creon: "these laws were not made in heaven," she says, and I do not have to obey the laws of human beings. She acts as she does because she does not respect authority and because she does not fear death. Haemon appeals to Creon on the basis of power - he suggests public opinion is against Creon and Creoin is at risk of losing his power as king. Only Creon and Tireseas ever acknowledge the issue of political authority. And with both, it is unclear whether authority can be the motivation, because in both situations, authority issues are tied to issues of power and personal gain. As the chorus comments - can one sublimate ones personal desires to the public good? If not then power is the only way to maintain public order.
Throughout history women have been underestimated. Society as a whole is patriarchal, and even though women have mead great strides in gaining equality, there are still crimes and prejudice against women. Women are capable of great feats, if they are given a chance. Some women ignored all social standards and managed to accomplish incredible things that changed the course of history.
A tragic hero is shown in both the plays Oedipus the King and Antigone written by Sophocles. Oedipus and Antigone are both tragic heroes with many similarities and differences. Antigone, however is more of a true modern hero rather than an ancient Greek tragic hero. Oedipus is self-confident, intelligent, and strong willed. Ironically these are the very traits which bring about his tragic discovery. Antigone is a strong person and will not give into orders. She doesn 't care what happens to her because the most important thing to her is that she does what is the right thing to do hence her brother may have a good after life.
