More often than not, when analyzing the similarities and differences between a written story and its reimagined film version, the differences leave an altered impression on the audience. In the short story, A Rose for Emily, the outstanding differences take the viewer on a ride they didn’t experience when reading the story. The biggest alteration is how the story’s chronological order takes a twist as they place the events back into an order in which they happened. Even though it is easier to follow, the original version left the audience dazed and confused for a reason. It made it less predictable, and allowed the reader to guess why Emily did those things. Therefore, in an attempt to keep that perfect mix, some crucial elements get dropped off to the side similar to an outdated phone. In the case of A Rose for Emily, the director takes the liberty to redo the way the story is presented by putting the series of events in the correct chronological order. Although it does make the story easier to follow, people lose the sense of confusion they had obtained when reading the story. That sense of confusion is important to the experience and was done for a reason. The story makes it harder for first time readers to comprehend what is going on since things are backwards, but in the movie version we see the courtship of Emily and Homer, see her buy poison, and then a rancid smell omitting from her house (Moore). That confusion is what makes the reader craving more instead of the expectedness that comes along with the film. When the reader is lost, he/she is more focused on trying to figure out where they are on the timeline and what is going on causing them to miss the subtle clues thought the story. In the story, Emily wouldn’t automatically be assumed as a murder, but rather she would be seen as a lonely woman secluded from the outside
