Within our society today there are among many criminals, however, we don't have the capacity to lock up all criminal offenders nor do we have the money to do so. Therefore, we have organized programs that allow criminal offenders to be released back into society under certain conditions. An example of this type of program are community corrections, which are a sentencing style that depends less on traditional confinement options and centers its sentencing more on corrections resources to the community. Their overall goal is to enhance desistance from the crime and to reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Probation and parole are the main types of sentencing programs that are utilized within our community. Probation is a sentence served while under supervision in a community. These conditions are similar to those of probation and include general and special conditions. General conditions usually include an agreement not to leave the state and they must obey extradition requests from other jurisdictions. Special conditions are mandated authority by sentencing and takes into consideration the background of the offender and the circumstance of the offense. Both of these methods probation and parole have their strengths and weaknesses. The strengths of probation and parole include lower costs, increased employment, community support, restitution, reduced risk of criminal socialization, and increased opportunity for rehabilitation. Among these advantages there are also many disadvantages with include relative lack of punishment, increased risk to community, increased social costs and discriminatory and unequal effects.
