Communities just need music. Individuals also need music, but also company. Community music brings different people with contrasting ideas to do one thing they all love - play music (Soundsense, 2015).
Community music is played in a community requires active teamwork between individuals to make music for the community. For example, people can set up a violin or piano club, where they play the music together and practice a song. Later, they might perform it in front of the town or village, usually for free, to promote the music skills of individuals, but also to support community development. Music therapy is a health profession that can help people with social, mental or physical needs. After looking at the needs of the client, the therapists helps them make, create, sing, play or listen to music. Music therapy gives another opportunity for the people to communicate, which might be easier for them than by using words. It allows the patients to express their feelings and this might give emotional support to them. On CNN, February 2011, Dr. Sanjay Gupta stated: “On this day, I was playing the patient. An intensive, exhaustive seven-hour schedule was presented, full of physical therapy, speech, recreational, occupational and my personal favourite: music therapy.” This quote shows how music therapy is integrated into a long process of mental healing, but it is the lesson even therapists look forward to (American Music Therapy Association, 2015).
Music education is what people learn in school or at classes for an instrument. In other words, music education is the study of learning, but also teaching music. This type of education is vital in learning to play an instrument. In it, you learn different musical expressions and how to play them (Vogt-Corlie, 2012). Basically, music education is what we learn in class. The difference between music education and therapy is that music therapy is used as a tool to improve a person’s mental state. The whole class could participate in singing a song they like. The target audience would be middle school. I am not sure I would want to sing in front of Middle School, though. It is just an example. This would both be a music education project and a community project, as it teaches students how to reach certain notes and achieve to create complex melodies. Doing it freely for the community, makes this project community music. Technically, community music is music education, because in community music, the main goal is to promote your music skills and play them specifically for your community’s entertainment. Thus, community music gives your community colour apart from the normal life
