Community investment- Drexel University’s Lindy Center for civic engagement is one example of how Drexel is civically engaged. This center connects benefit-eligible staff, faculty, alumni, friends of the university and students to volunteer opportunities. The volunteers can go the any non-profit organization, community, or schools. The goal for this center is to enrich the quality of life for the people of the Philadelphia area. Volunteering is important because it allows individuals to become directly involved in their communities. Through the volunteer service, the volunteers can make a difference in the life of our communities when helping those in need. I chose this because I believe in the importance of volunteer. It helps people to realize
The Drexel community strives to provide public safety and security, homeownership, economic development, community enrichment, and education in partnership with its neighbors. One of the strategies to provide public safety is the promise zone. Drexel partners with the City of Philadelphia and committed nonprofit agencies to apply for and receive a promise zone designation on behalf of West Philadelphia. The neighborhood that we live in has a direct impact on our youth’s future. I chose this because as a citizen who grew up in the Philadelphia neighborhood, I understand how important it is to be protected from harm.
Community Investment- Drexel’s Liberty scholars program grants 50 Philadelphia High school graduates with scholarship award covering 100 percent tuition and fees in all years at Drexel University. The program allows students to success through a dedicated mentor and a learning community in which all scholars live together during their first year. I chose this because it allows those in our Philadelphia community who are unable to afford college a chance to receive education and
...ieve life goals. The community should encourage continued community service from college students that receive scholarships and or some type of financial aid to volunteer, with the existing programs. This could increase the amount of people available to these after school and summer programs, while saving the city some money. This could prove to be a major step in continuing to improve the city and make it a desired place to live and prosper.
Recognizing the significance of the problem, the cities developed the Operation Impact & Philadelphia Foot Patrol project, to address the issue of deterrence, public safety, and restoring neighborhoods to a safe environment for kids and the elderly to live. The co...
Detroit is a story of a once flourishing city that has been on a long downslide for decades. There are miles of unoccupied homes and buildings, and crimes and unemployment are at an all-time high. Many aspects of the city are breaking down, including the school system. The Detroit Public School System has lost over eighty thousand students due to high enrollment in charter schools, the large economic decline, and the departure of residents. For many years no one has taken responsibility for the public school system. However, for Detroit to rise again, it is necessary for someone to take responsibility, make a plan, and make sure that children are safe, well cared for, and are receiving a high quality education when going to school each day. In 2016, schools are low-performing with poor test scores, are falling apart, and teachers and parents have decided to take a stand.
Big Creek People In Action, Inc.’s mission statement is to serve “the community of McDowell County in the realms of education and literacy, leadership development, volunteer service, service learning, arts and culture, housing, recreation, and collaborative partnerships (Big Creek People In Action, Inc., 2012, ¶1). The location of the organization is Caretta, West Virginia, sitting at the intersection of three roads between several mountains. In the early morning, the sun shines down on the building, a former school that is called the Caretta Community Center. Here, people take fitness classes such as Zumba, classes to prepare to take the GED, send their children for after school care, and apply for assistance programs like the ones that make home repairs. Although the loss of coal, and lack of other industries has left a severe lack of jobs in the community the center also offers job search training, resume preparation, and some job training programs (Big Creek People In Action, Inc., 2012, ¶1-45). One line on the agency’s website could be deemed objectionable, however, as it seems to almost sneer at the people served. “Big Creek People in Action also has a Job Training Program for those placed here by the Department of Health and Human Resources to perform community service in or...

Often times I find myself reminiscing about my child hood. I recall driving throughout the prominent metro Detroit neighborhood in which I grew up, Rosedale Park. See in those days my community was a gem which shone bright toward the edification of the Motor City. On streets like Piedmont, Grandville, Stahelin and Artesian one could drive by almost at any time and see children outside playing, adults on porches and sidewalks fellowshipping, and houses abounding with vibrant lights, laughter, and with life. This was my community; moreover, this was a facet of my adolescence that I ignorantly took for granted. Today desolation has grown sovereign over this beautiful gem. Today the sounds of laughter have all but faded into a resounding restless silence. One could even say that abandoned houses and boarded doors and windows have become indigenous, not only to Rosedale Park, but to every part of the metro Detroit area. However, one thing has remained constant; Rosedale Park, no rather Detroit as a whole is still my community.

Tashea argues, “By investing in recreation centers, we can provide alternatives to delinquency. By providing reception centers, Baltimore could create access to services for our most vulnerable youth” (1). Community centers are safe places for afterschool programs as Wilson and Philip, state, “For many youth, the recreation/drop-in center is a nonthreatening, relatively unstructured place to play sports and hang out in an otherwise high-risk urban area” (73). In Baltimore where the community leaders and stakeholders have brought the at-risk youth problem to the surface, they can start to see some positive outcomes. In positive data about a Baltimore Police Athletic League center Chung, et al., notes, “A study of the Goodnow Police Athletic League (PAL) center in northeast Baltimore, the first center to open in May 1995, also indicated that juvenile arrests dropped nearly 10 percent, the number of armed robberies dropped from 14 to 7, assaults with handguns were eliminated, and common assaults decreased from 32 to 20.3” (16). These statistics further prove that prevention options work effectively, and can greatly improve our American
A number of facilitators helped this department achieve these accomplishments. Mini-grants available on campus funded the faculty-partnership luncheon. In addition, four faculty members were awarded mini-grants to develop service-learning components in their courses. Departmental leadership has been a very strong advocate for service-learning. Recognition from discipline enhanced the image of this department on campus when the discipline newsletter highlighted the advances in service-learning in the department. The Office of Community Service-learning was helpful in training and assisting faculty interested in developing service-learning components in their courses. The campus generally recognizes service-learning and provides awards for those involved in service-learning. Two such campus awards have been given to members of the department studied.
Community service is something that I have always engaged. In college, I worked with chemically dependent children as both a caretaker and a mentor. After I graduated, I taught at-risk children in a community youth outreach program. To remain involved and aware of the focus of my studies during my first year of law school, I volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center teaching youth their basic legal rights. Essentially, we strove to empower kids by providing practical information about the legal system and to help them develop more favora...
Kim, in the United States, grades are not the only factor in evaluating school applicants and job candidates. From Rhodes Scholar selections to college applications, excellence in other areas such as leadership, volunteer activities, sports and arts is equally important (p82-90). In American schools, students are encouraged to do volunteer work. So much so that many schools have guidelines for how much time students are expected to spend serving in the community. Children learn the value of giving from an early age. Volunteer activities is one way Americans feel a part of things and share the goal of serving and contributing to build their communities. From neighborhood watch programs to environmental issues, Americans do not wait for the government to initiate action: they take action to bring about the changes they desire. Therefore, Americans view volunteer work as a way to teach children and young adults values such as cooperation and teamwork, dedication and work ethics, equality and social justice, leadership, generosity and compassion for
The entire community plays an essential role in the growth and development of children within our community. As a school leader, building an inclusive school culture that is open and friendly to all stakeholders using a variety of effective methods is crucial. There is no magic formula to incorporating a positive school culture, much depends on the leadership of the campus. The leadership on campus cultivates the climate providing support and respect for everyone invested in the student’s education.
More and more frequently, incidents of drug deals, gang violence, and domestic shootings are shown on the news. Many of these incidents occur in urban areas just steps away from where young children play. Healthy, fun environments within urban cities, such as playgrounds, community pools, and age-appropriate splash pads, can encourage children to safely enjoy being children and help them, refrain against life-altering actions such as drugs, gang violence, and sexual exploitation. Another way of installing safety within communities is by installing neighborhood watch programs. These committees make it their priority to insure the safety of all members within the community and take action in preventing dangerous
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
