Throughout the history of the world one type of governing has become quite infamous among many civilizations. Whether it is embraced or feared, communism is a very controversial issue. In the article “Communism and the Meaning of Social Memory: Towards a Critical-Interpretive Approach” the idea of communism is explored and interpreted in an analytic way. What makes this particular article interesting is the concept of social memory. This idea is explored and explained throughout the articles entirety. This article conveys ideas five main aspects of Communism and social memory; national narratives, interpreting social memory, understanding the recent past, and the perceptions of communism. The first topic discussed in this article is the concept of national narratives. In the article this is described as the memory an individual or group of people have that pertains to certain events. There are two types of narratives: national and individual. The form deliberated in this editorial is national narratives. National narratives are often referred to as public narratives. Rather than owned by a specific person, this is created by society. A few examples of societal based memory include museums, monuments and news journals. The article states, “Existing shared national narratives or “narrative templates” have an important role in shaping collective interpretation and memory” (Tileagă, 3). The second and perhaps most important idea discussed is interpreting social memory. The article defines social memory as expressing divergent themes, which repeatedly increase conversation, argumentation and predicaments. The author breaks down social memory interpretation in three key steps. The three main points are “describe(ing) the ... ... middle of paper ... ...res how the official (controversial) political imaginary, and histories of the (Romanian) communist past are constructed in talk and text” (Tileagă, 19).
