• I am writing about two firms that I did my internship at. They are both very different firms and I would like to compare the differences in the various communication styles of the organizations. One of them is called SIG (Susquehanna International Group). SIG is one of the world’s largest financial trading firms with over a thousand employees. They have offices across the globe and trade all major financial instruments. SIG is distinguished for their cutting edge technological trading systems, and their disciplined and quantitative trading approach. SIG’s employees consist of traders, and operations and technology staff to assist the traders. They employ numerous Drexel undergraduate students for internships and co-op programs. I worked in both the trading and operations department.

“We strive to seek diversity of thought, question our assumptions, and challenge what we think we know” is SIG’s motto. This statement, without doubt, has successfully shaped SIG’s values and goals. The SIG environment fosters originality and novelty and intellectual curiosity is encouraged. SIG has a laid back and informal atmosphere, where casual attire was the norm. All the employees were extremely friendly and easy to talk to. The managers were never too busy to help the interns with any issues they might have or answers and any of their questions or concerns. SIG employed a flat chain of command. There were few management levels and the focus was on the employees and maximizing their potential. The bureaucracy was a minimum and all the employees, including interns, were supported to make decisions on their own. ... interview was planned and face to face. The interviews were fairly straightforward and concentrated on skills and abilities. Exit interviews were designed to sort any remainder inquiries a terminated employee might have.

Communication is so much more than just a conversation. There are so many facets to being an efficient communicator. Being proficient and knowledgeable about the communication processes is crucial to succeed in a business field. As a business major in the era of globalization, the do’s and don’ts of business communication is especially important. This communication class helped me not only identify various elements that influence or detract from successful communication but also to apply that in the real world. It was fascinating being able to connect everything that I leaned in class to what I experienced on my previous two internships.
