Reflect & Relate by Steven McCornack defines communication as “the process through which people use messages to generate meanings within and across context, cultures, channels, and media” (McCornack, 2013. Pg 6). The question that remains about communication is, will it ever by completely competent. Having competent communication requires a few things such as communicating in ways that are appropriate, effective, and ethical (McCornack, 2013. Pg 21-22). Even with these ways of communication, it still might not be reliable. There can be many times where no matter how hard you try the goal of you communication may be completely misunderstood, this can happen for many different reasons.

One way we can improve our ability to communicate by considering ourselves. We all have a Johari Window, which has four quadrants that help us determine what about ourselves are open to reflection and sharing with others, and what is hidden to both others and ourselves. When communicating our public area of the Johari window is smaller then our hidden area, however as we form relationships the public area grows while the hidden area shrinks. We all have a Blind area of the Johari Window as well and they are parts of yourself that others readily know about you that you may not be aware of, this blind area is important to improving your communication in time.
