The use of social media has been incorporated as a major role into everyday life among Americans. From individuals, young and old, to celebrities and businesses, everyone can be found logging on to the World Wide Web to engage in the social media craze that consumes so much of our time. Social media appeals to each of us, because whether we are searching for estranged friends, “following” celebrities we idolize, or looking for reviews, menus, or business hours at a local restaurant, we have the capability to do so by using social media. Indeed our lives have become easier with the use of social media, but what social media really does to our society is more tragic. Interactions through social media are not the same as face-to-face, leading to teenagers and young adults losing their ability to read emotions. In one study, conducted by scientists at UCLA, between students who continued to use social media and students who went five days without using social media the results indicated; sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices. (Wolpert, 2014). Comparatively, how often do you see a friend from social media, in a waiting room or out at dinner, and they are not able to engage in a meaningful conversation with you? Unfortunately, the days of signing on to the World Wide Web to connect with friends and the world around us have been tarnished by the negativity that social media has cast onto our society. As of 2015 there are 2.04 billion social media users worldwide, and it is estimated that by 2019 there will be 2.72 billion users. As the number of users logging on to these networks continue to grow, it is inevitable that our social skills will continue to diminish coupled with an increased number of social media linked crime.
