Communication between modes is suggested to be a controversial subject and the only thing that actually defines it is humans themselves. After reading “Why Don't We Complain?” by William F. Buckley, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr and “The Keeper of The Books” by Borges it was thought to be a worthy idea to actually research what people believe about the controversy. In the course of this paper, it will be proved to the readers through Carr, Buckley and Borges how interactions with different modes of communication, has affected our way of thought processes.
Printed books and eBooks contain many different sides to each story. One could love the concept of having technology at all times, while another person could simply love the idea of being able to “feel the [pages] turn in your hands”, or even the “scent of the paper” could be enough to draw you into the idea. EBooks have come a long way with technology and every few years companies decide it is time for a better machine to read with. Books and eBooks, along with technology, have many pros and cons to our systems of everyday communication.
In today's society it is safe to say that there is always going to be a technology system that will out due a printed book. The idea of an eBook gives many teachers and readers a calming sensation due to the fact that they are “more current (Mann)” than print. EBooks are an environment saving method, “they require no trees to create them” (Weber); they create an eco-friendly and safer world for us to live in. They are very durable and even “small sized [which] is great for traveling” (J.), they do not require much space and can be very light and can fit in small or even tight places. If you ever feel like you have run out...

...They recommend this, stating that it will help a dry eye become moist and it will not cause as much strain. Any problems with health risks can be prevented and that is why e-readers are considered neutral because we are the deciders of “whether the device will be used or abandoned” (Polgar 17). We cannot blame technology for our means of need.

This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. By displaying a series of graphs, as well as including multiple data sets, the text explains how e-books compare with printed texts; then, analysis of these facts is also included to show the reader the authors’ point.

In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. Although writing has been around for thousands of years, the medium of books is a relatively recent phenomenon. In the mid 15th century, German Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press that made multiple, cheap copies of works that were easily available for the masses. With the help of other technological developments including the linotype in the mid-1880’s, the printing process became easier and faster and therefore books became cheaper and more available. Also in the mid-1880’s the development of public education increased the demand for books making them even more popular and ensuring them as a permanent form of media for the masses.

As we are introduced to the existence of new informational and communicational technologies within our society, it is valid to argue that our communication patterns and routines are being directly influenced by them. Since we use communication as a way of understanding ourselves, the people, and the world around us, the different media we use for communication can have major effects on our way of thinking and perceiving information. Marshall McLuhan metaphorically states “we shape our tools and afterwards our tools shape us” (Module 5: From Exploration to Gutenberg Galaxy). This explains how using a new medium to convey our message has mental and social consequences on the individuals within society. These media of communication are not a separate
During the past few years, the publishing and reading world has been facing a veritable digital book onslaught. E-books have been outselling print books on Amazon since 2011 (Polanka, 7). While digital book sales skyrocketed, print book sales, especially those of mass marked paperbacks, diminished. Even the fact that e-books are not much cheaper than print books does not seem to interfere with the former’s popularity. It would seem that the age of print books is about to end, and quite soon.
Reading print books not only improves speech but also helps gets a grasp of what reading books is all about. The TopTenReviews stated,” you 're never going to get that comforting smell of paper or the weight of a good book in your hands when reading an eBook” (1). Getting a brand new book, is ecstatic as the smell of paper or the turning of pages is part of tradition. Reading with a book is convenient because it does not have any battery power to operate. According to TopTenReviews, “Most of the time you have a good battery life but, there will be times when you forget to charge it” (2). Traveling with books helps when doing reading, it will be beneficial if the tablet dies. Reading with print books helps escape from technology that will be distracting towards the
