I am very pleased today to introduce the beautiful young lady of our class, Kebranagast Maxwell. She was born in New Rochelle, NY but originally she is an Ethiopian. She has been raised in The Bronx. As she told me, I learned that Ethiopian culture is very different. They like to eat vegan as they believe it is a healthier lifestyle. Also, they cover themselves and usually wear skirts. They wear turban to cover their hair. However, in spite of our different cultures, we often tend not to be able to maintain it due to several factors related to our daily life. So, at first she wanted to be a Nutritionist but LIU Post only offers that major, so as far she did not decide any major yet but she is thinking about becoming a Nurse Practitioner. However, she is not really interested about it but she is planning to do it since she needs a job and money to build her own clinic. In her clinic she wants to provide consultations and care to females from young girls to pregnant women or any other issues. She planned to have psychologists in her clinic. Not only that, she even decided to have rooms for several activities like yoga, dance, etc. Besides her major in Health Sciences, she is also pursuing minor in Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) to be a certified dancer. As I have mentioned earlier, she wants to open her own clinic. She is planning to be a Nurse Practitioner because she wants a job that can financially stable her so that her dream of opening her clinic becomes possible. Opening a clinic definitely requires a lot of money, therefore she is creating a strong foundation for herself so that nothing interrupts her way. She did not give up on arts or dancing but she is not much involved with it since she thinks it wont really make her financially strong, therefore she is more focused into becoming a Nurse Practitioner which will make her financially
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. Growing up my parents always taught my sister and I that we should always be grateful for what we had. Take care of all our toys and expensive things that they brought us. They taught us that you have to work hard for what you want and nothing is handed to you. Even though me and my sister always got what wanted we also knew that we worked for it and that made getting it even better. I believe my parents raised me pretty good. I always respected them and knew my limits, me and my sister had chores we had to do and if they weren't done by the end of the week we would have a consequence. This taught us responsibility and that in the real world if you don't do your job you would be fired or there would be a consequence you would have to pay. Lately I have noticed that a lot of kids in today's society are very ungrateful. They feel entitled and believe that they shouldn't have to work for anything. They think things should just be handed to them without any questions asked. I think I have a way to stop this rising trait in today's youth.
As a nurse seeking my bachelor in nursing I have a lot of mentors in my career path. The person I choose to interview is my mentor name, Karen. In the process of her nursing career, she was influenced by her mentor to continue her education, in women's health because of her passion for young teens. Karen started her career in nursing at Grand Valley State University where she earned a Bachelor Degree in nursing. After having her BSN for many years, Karen decision to continue her education at Michigan State University where she received a Master degree in Nursing.
The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. Today we are here to celebrate Paul and his retirement from Bay Area Sports Therapy after 18 years of work. Throughout his time working here, Paul has been a constant positive influence not only on the patients in his care but his colleagues as well. He walked into work everyday with a smile on his face ready to take on the patients and make the best of every situation possible. I’ve watched him grow from a young kid just out of college, to a man who is ready to take on the world. Your time with this company has had a great influence on the dynamic of how we run business.
My dad showed me this speech when I was young and it is what made me get into baseball. This speech inspired my whole childhood. Lou's words made me want what he had. This is why I played some many years and put a lot of my life into playing baseball. I know others have been in the same spot I have. Everyone who plays baseball looks to get to what Lou described in his speech. Everyone wants their rival team to send them a parting gift because they have so much respect for you. These words carried with me my whole sport career and shaped how I wanted other people to view me. This will be a speech that I show my children, hoping they get the same message out of it that I did.
In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, but I felt that I needed to know how to choose a medical specialty that I feel is right for me. My first step was to change my major. I chose to change my major to biology. My love for science led me to this decision. I began to explore the opportunities open to biology students.
It is probably a mistake that I am standing here giving a speech for graduation. In fact it is probably a mistake that I am even graduating from this school at all -- believe me, just as most people in this class I have tested the limits of attendance, of sleeplessness, and of procrastination. At the beginning of my high schooling, I was even testing dropping out ... and if that wasn't a mistake, I don't know what was. After four years of Starr altering our minds, it seemed most fitting for me to spend my four minutes talking about mistakes. Thank goodness for them, by the way -- it is only when we truly screw up big time that we are ever stopped in our tracks -- stopped, briefly, to learn lessons of worth.
