A world without comedy would be similar to a butter knife, it's dull, useless, and achieves very little. The world would be filled with impolite and obnoxious people. Comedy helps keep the flow of the world going. It allows people to laugh at one another and shrug off rude comments at the same time. It also creates a casual environment. Comedy is everywhere and it helps the world be a little less boring. Comedy can be found on televisions, the internet, and books, only to name a few. Comedy creates the illusion that things will get better; however, comedy gets better by making the situation worse. There are many types of comedy and some are: satire, farce, and one-liners. The definition of comedy is any story or event of a light, humorous nature that has a happy ending. One place where there was a reoccurring theme of comedy was in the movie Pure Luck. Three characteristics of comedy found in the movie were that logic and standard solutions do not always work in comical plots, comedy focuses on the irregularities in an otherwise orderly world, and comical characters consider the abnormal to be very normal.
One repeating characteristic of comedy throughout the movie is that logical and standard solutions do not always work in comical plots. For example, Dr. Monosoff suggests that they use an accountant, Eugene Proctor, to help find Mr. Highsmith’s daughter. The reason they pick Eugene is because Dr. Monosoff believes that Eugene and Valerie Highsmith have one thing in common: coincident misfortune syndrome. This means that Eugene and Valerie are so misfortunate that they will coincidentally meet. This idea was told to the detective, Raymond Campanella, and he thought that this was the most absurd thing he’s ever hea...

...helicopter and this caused the pilot to land. Coincidentally, this is close to where Valerie is. These are all examples of how comical characters consider the abnormal to be very normal.
In conclusion, normal solutions don’t work in comical plots, abnormal things are normal to the characters, and comedy focuses on the irregularities in an otherwise orderly world. Pure Luck does a great job of portraying comedy. It made a lot of people laugh throughout the movie and that is the point of comedy. The world would be a boring place without comedy because there would be no entertainment, but at the same time comedy can get very personal with the use of satire, which can cause problems. Nothing is taken seriously, nothing is bad, and everyone wins in the end in the world of comedy. For the most part, comedy is a good thing and it helps keep the world in motion.
Humor is more than just amusing entertainment to pass the time. Though jokes and witty banter can be shallow, humor can go deeper than surface level to convey messages to audiences who would otherwise be close-minded about certain ideas. Humor is a great tool to get audiences to change the way they think, feel, and act. In “Saying Goodbye to Yang,” Alexander Weinstein uses humor to criticize some of society’s faults such as the way it has become heavily reliant on technology, racially insensitive, and judgmental.
Humour was an antiseptic that cleaned the deepest of personal wounds.” Jimmy said (208). Throughout Alexie story many jokes were achieved as an effective humor since it brought laughter “Well, I told her the doctor showed me my X-rays and my favoruite tumour was just about the size of a baseball…” (204) Jimmy said joking about the tragedy of his illness and his imminent death. Dr. Gill Greengross an evolutionary psychologist and anthropologist from the University of New Mexico said “humor can help people deal with tragedies.” So humor is effective and a very good way to cope with
...ithout comic relief, the audience is forced to only feel horrified by what they are seeing when in reality such atrocious things never happened. The directors who dared to infuse comedy into their works all had the common goal to help the people watching the films understand the Holocaust more profoundly. Comedy can help display how the victims of the Holocaust truly were as innocent people, and further emphasize the level of repulsion that actually went on in these situations. In each Holocaust comedy there is a perfect combination between humor and grief that stays with us from the first to the last line.
Life was consumed by constant orders, labor, malnutrition, disease, and murder in the concentration camps. Yet somehow the human psyche in many individuals was able to endure throughout these imprisonments. Men and women were almost completely dehumanized during this genocide, but their psyche survived it. People had to find little things to keep themselves content and to nurture their psyche. “Humor was another of the soul’s weapons in the fight for self-preservation” (63). Humor allows a person to escape a situation and rise above it, even if only for a short time. Humor can never be taken away from anyone because it is naturally within us. Humor within the concentration camps allowed people, for even a split second, to feel like they were free and not in this confinement. “The attempt to develop a sense of humor and to see things in a humorous light is some kind of a trick learned while mastering the art of living” (64). It would be much more rigorous on the human psyche if one could not escape every so often and realize the humor in something. Humor allowed people to become more relaxed and release some stress, allowing the human psyche to stay healthier.
Steve Almond’s “Funny is the New Deep” talks of the role that comedy has in our current society, and most certainly, it plays a huge role here. Namely, through what Almond [Aristotle?] calls the “comic impulse”, we as a people can speak of topics that would otherwise make many of uncomfortable. Almond deems the comic impulse as the most surefire way to keep heavy situations from becoming too foreboding. The comic impulse itself stems from our ability and unconscious need to defend and thus contend with the feeling of tragedy. As such, instead of rather forcing out humor, he implies that humor is something that is not consciously forced out from an author, but instead is more of a subconscious entity, coming out on its own. Almond emphasizes
According to Aristotle, “Comedy can be any colloquy or performance generally intended to amuse or stimulate laughter”. In modern times, comedy can be found in different forms, such as television, movies, theatres and stand-up comedy.
According to Everything’s an Argument by Andrea A. Lunsford and John J. Ruszkiewicz, “Humor has always played an important role in argument…” (38). Humor itself is something that activates amusement or laughter. Moreover, in popular culture satire is a tool that is used to point out things in our society. Satire opens the minds of people to philosophies they might completely deny, using humor. There are many elements of satire that identify flaws within our society. A couple of satire elements that will be discussed are irony and exaggeration. In addition, a parody is used in popular culture as a way to mock or mimic situation or person.
Comedy shows an aspect of the entertainment ability in the genre. The old quirky village being able to work together shows how funny and determined they are to get the money. The scene where the lottery giver shows up at the funeral in, with the man who won the lottery. The way the town goes along to Ian fake claim of David’s death. This gave a suspenseful and comedic ride that kept the viewers engaged.
Delicatessen tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world where many people are starving and are forced to take extreme measures to survive. The film fallows a group of people living in an apartment building run by the butcher who owns it. To survive this group of people have resulted to cannibalism. The dark subject matter in the film may prevent some viewers from appreciating the comedy hidden within; however, it is also what gives this film a unique feel and make the comedic elements have a greater impact on most viewers. Dark Comedies demonstrate the importance of balancing humor and seriousness in order provide a truly enjoyable film.
Comedy differs in the mood it approaches and addresses life. It presents situations which deal with common ground of man’s social experience rather than limits of his behaviour – it is not life in the tragic mode, lived at the difficult and perilous limits of the human condition.
Now a day’s comedy can come in many forms. Mostly comedies are appearing in medias. However, comedies are also found in books, comedy clubs, and comics/cartoon art. Some of the time women are diving into the comedy world because they want

If there is one way to bring a smile to someone’s face, it is laughter. Funny jokes, comical stunts, sarcasm- Every person is different when it comes to what makes them laugh. Some find dry humor comical. Others think sarcasm or joke-filled ranting are the best. ‘Comedy’ is such a broad term, broad enough to allow everyone to find something they find comical. In fact, ‘comedy’ includes a specific type of drama, one where the protagonist is joyful and happy endings are expected. Comedy is like a drug; it allows you to escape reality. When we say the word ‘comedy’ in the present, we are generally referring to a type of performance which provides humor. However, in its broadest sense, comedy has only one purpose: comedy makes people smile and
Humor has been the source of entertainment throughout history. Today humor is practiced in movies, plays, songs, television shows and radio. Humor has brought fame and fortune to those who have mastered its power.
There are many characteristics that make up a comedy. Characteristics such as mistaken identity, battle of the sexes, and jumping to conclusions are what set the comedic story apart from the tragedy. Within a comedy, no matter how much fault, and dismay may appear within the story, there always seems to be the classic ending of “…and they all lived happily ever after…” Comedies capture the viewer with a sense of compassion and love for the characters in the story. Each character has their own essence, to which they pertain a flaw of some sorts, which the audience can relate to. With the relation to characters there is defiantly a certain interest that is grabbed by the actors, which sucks the audience into the show.
