From growing up in Singapore, the “Clean and Green” city, to living in “Oil Country” Texas, and making frequent trips to India I have been exposed to a wide spectrum of energy dependence. On one such visit to an Ashram in India, I was amazed by the effective use of solar panels and internal water recycling plants to support a small, ascetic community, tucked away in a city that lost electricity for a few hours every day. This experience inspired me to examine the potential for large-scale applications of similar clean technologies to mitigate challenges such as high energy prices, volatile foreign oil sources, and food shortages in the developed world. In this global economy, I am now determined to create systematic efficiencies across the energy industry and increase the availability of low-cost and clean energy options to end consumers.
Immediately following my MBA, I plan to continue developing advanced management expertise and domain knowledge of the energy industry through a Strategic Management role. In this position, I will manage multi-faceted teams to implement sound business strategies in global energy markets while sharpening my core competencies in finance, strategy, and sustainability. Building upon my current endeavors with child literacy, I will also continue to help underprivileged children in India by constructing “green” schools with 24/7 utility services, which will increase accessibility and regular attendance.
In the long run, I want to spearhead an alternative energy practice within an integrated company. My team will analyze the clean energy landscape to identify disruptive technologies, develop value-generating business models, and collaborate with start-ups and venture capitalists to market these al...

...those regions. I will then apply this knowledge when partnering or negotiating with international organizations throughout my career.
Above all, the concentrated focus on leadership and social enterprise at Wharton through “Leadership Ventures” and the “Social Enterprise Fellows Program” will allow me to evolve as an effective communicator, an innovative manager, and a compassionate leader. I will utilize these leadership skills to drive my future initiatives with a holistic lens and a sense of social responsibility. In turn, my diverse background and avid interest in the emerging cleantech market will add another international dimension to the Wharton community while contributing to its enthusiasm for clean energy management. I believe that the Wharton MBA experience will provide me the optimal platform to achieve my goal of giving back to the global community.
With forward movement in society, it is important to consider not just what will propel most toward success, but also what will help to sustain the environment along the way. What may have been considered appropriate decades ago, may no longer be socially acceptable due to the changes observed in both the business world and the environment (Fiske, 2010). Therefore, it is important for organizations thriving in today?s economy to consider how they may capitalize most effectively from their product or service of choice while minimizing or eliminating any damages along the way (Knoke, 2012).
Many accept that the sole legitimate purpose of a business is to maximize profit and shareholder value. In doing so there is a growing concern whether the companies have acted in a social and environmentally accepted manner (Brueckner 2011, 25). Chevron's vision, "to be the global energy company most admired for its people, partnership and performance" reflects the Chevron Way and they value to place the highest priority on the health and safety of their workforce and protecting the environment. They claim to proactively work towards improving their processes to reduce pollution and waste (Chevron 2012).
Jim Collins expressed ideas people might overlook in business and in their careers as well. He really opened up my eyes on how to approach the rest of my education and taking this to transition into full-time employment. Many lessons can be taken from this book, but it’s important to understand, while good might be good, it’s not great. Don’t just rely on good, there are always more you can do to be great, produce great results and be a part of a great company. So as mentioned before are you a hedgehog or fox? Do you want to be great or are you satisfied with good? Look in your three circles, avoid the doom loop and keep your flywheel spinning, after all of that you can become the energy industry’s next great leader.
I chose to look into General Electric for this project because they are an energy supplier and multi-national company. Energy providers have a reputation as a money hungry companies that care about the bottom line more than people and the planet. It is easy for a person to assume that a corporation of GE’s size, money would be its only concern. What I learned was that GE has a public image problem more than a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) problem. The company has been working to make the people of the planet more Earth friendly by creating technology that has higher efficiency with fewer emissions and lower resource demands. GE has a well-established strategy for Corporate Social Responsibility. As a result of CSR the company has reaped profit benefits as well as a perceptibly better company image. It was with great expectation that I chose GE in the hopes to find an area that a global energy supplier would need improvement. I found that GE is within the top-10 of companies that demonstrate CSR. GE shares this distinguishment with other companies such as Patagonia, Nike and General Motors. Besides continuing the course they have started, GE could further add to their repertoire by providing roadmaps for other companies to follow in order to be a business with demonstrable CSR.

When picking an energy resource for the topic of this paper, I bounced around a lot of ideas. Then it occurred to me that I should write about what I will be living with in about a month. My mom just finished designing and building our earthbag, solar, off-grid house, a four-year endeavor. I will soon live in a place powered by one of the most common alternative energy resources, solar energy, so I should learn more about it. At our new house, we have two stand alone pedestals with six 170W panels on each pedestal, making for a 2040W or 2kW solar system.
Without doubt the XXI century has changed our priorities, especially when it comes to the way we do business. Popular sustainable business models, as advertised in the media, have evolved into much more than a moral obligation or an external requirement to generate money. Essentially, are forcing companies to reinvent the systems and approaches with which they generate value and profitability to the company.

There is a very solid reason for selecting green technology as compared to the other technologies available because there is a very limited amount of natural resources like coal, petroleum available to man kind and these are getting depleted at an alarming rate. Decentralization of energy system is process of dispersing energy or redistributing energy from central location. [1] Currently, in the world large centralized facilities provide final form of energy from primary energy sources, such as oil refineries and power plants. These plants distribute energy over long distances which effect the overall efficiency. Depending upon different factors like health, environmental and economic etc. energy production systems are built away from the cities or near to the cities. Decentralized energy system not only fulfill rural needs but also able to provide centralized energy production in urban areas. [2]
