Lord of The Flies by William Golding is about young british boys that are stranded on an island together. The boys come to find out that there is no form of authority on the island, and they are on their own. Together they try to create a government system, only to find out that not everyone agrees with the rules. They start off by learning each other's names. Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Roger, Simon, Samneric, and the littluns. Then they create a government, electing each other to rule, hunt, collect food and build shelters. Throughout the story the boys particularly Jack metamorphosize into blood thirsty savages. To create an image of how the boys changed throughout the story William Golding had them paint their faces. Often, face paint is used to transform one’s self into something it is not. In the novel the colors symbolize certain things about the characters. Yin and Yang symbolize opposites, the good and the bad. The face paint shows that throughout the book they have good intentions but when the face paint or “mask” goes on they are the exact opposite of what they were before. The colors show there are two sides to every person. That there is a fight on the inside on whether the bad side, or the good side will show.
In conclusion, Lord of The Flies shows the good sides of people and the bad. William Golding describes changes of all the characters in the book through different symbols and face paint. By showing the changes he builds character, and connects it to the theme and tone of the book. My drawing shows the transformation of characters while they have their faces painted. Altogether, the island is a society within a society. To understand it you need to know how the characters act towards one another, and how they change when something about them is
