Character and Context:
The protagonist of the novel Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage is the character Tsukuru Tazaki. He had always felt that he didn’t know his identity and was just an “empty vessel” and was lacking in originality, color and in general just everything from his appearance to his persona. Tsukuru is not very social, he is quite introverted, unconfident and is very discouraged about himself. He is one to think that he was not essential and had nothing to offer to others and there was nothing special about him.

A perspective that I gained is from a quote on page 111 “maybe inside the wound, under the scab, the blood is still silently flowing.” It made me realize that, from the character, having gone through something emotionally traumatic and thinking that it was a situation of the past, but not fully knowing that deep within there is still something lingering. Additionally, my recognition of the world expanded by the statement on page 245 “people are in constant motion, never stationary. No one knows what will happen next.” Regarding this, it made me comprehend that everything in life is constantly moving and it is unknown in what will occur next as well as referring to that everyone should live in the present and savor important moments. Another knowledge that I obtained from is on page 102 “you should be able to handle what life sends your way. You need to use the thread of logic, as best as you can, to skillfully sew into yourself everything that’s worth living for.” This statement helped me realize that although everything in the moment may seem complicated, over time, one will conclude that it was not a significant problem and everything in life had a purpose. Overall, there were many expressive quotes in this novel that describes how people may perceive life and how relatable it can be in our everyday
