The Sixth Sense is a movie about a strange young boy and his child psychologist. The young boy, Cole Sear, is seemingly terrified of something not yet known. The psychologist, Dr. Malcolm Crowe,begins to realize the young boy is seeing spirits. After the two have discovered how to help Cole no longer be scared of the ghost that visit him, Cole later helps Malcolm discover that he died after being shot by a former patient. However this essay is not about the plot it, it is about the use of color in the film. The film uses the overall color to help create a dark mood. At the beginning of the film when Malcolm and his wife are celebrating his achievement the color is warm. The use of warm colors, coming from the fire, in this scene creates the mood of joy and happiness. The film quickly shift to cooler colors as they discover the man hiding in the bathroom. Watching it this time and actually taking looking for the use of color I found a few more instances this time than I did the first time I watched it. Red seems to be a symbol for the spirit world. If you have ever seen the movie you know of Cole’s deep connection with the spirit world, so to begin with I am going to talk about him. The instance where the red stands out however is the door of the church. With the dullness in color of the surrounding the red is very noticeable. Cole had went in the church to escape the ghost he had saw. Cole’s fort is also built in red, he often goes in the fort he has built to protect himself from the spirits. Another one of the major times we see red is when Cole attends the birthday party. Cole wears a red sweater to the child's party and at some point ventures upstairs. Right before he walks up the stairs a red balloon floats up and after being locked in the balloon
