The Third World all started with imperialism. Imperialism was lead by the Europeans who went out searching for foreign treasures, and to conquer everything in their path. The idea of Imperialism dates back to ancient times, with conquerors like Alexander The Great, going out to expand their empires as far as possible. Imperialism really began in the 16th century with the Europeans, whose advancement allowed them to set up colonies in less developed parts of the world. European countries quickly began dividing up the rest of the world, starting in Africa and Asia, and spreading into the Americas. Colonizing the world became like a game to the Europeans, who went around sucking anything of value out of underdeveloped civilizations.
Colonization of Somalia began in the mid 19th century, when European nations began scrambling for control of Africa. Many of these attempts by Europeans were met with heavy resistance and even frequent failures, at the hands of the less advanced natives. Italy, Britain and France all attempted to colonize parts of Somalia but did not do so easily. These countries wanted control of Somalia, hopping she could provide use or wealth for their nation; England wanted to uses Somalia as to help export out of the middle east while Italy and France hoped to utilize it agriculturally. The three nations took portions of what is known today as Somalia, England held the coast, with Italy and France to the north. The British portion became known as British Somaliland, and the Italian Italian Somaliland.

Somalia sits among these nations plagued by seemingly never-ending war and poverty. Other nations step in and attempt to help the third world, providing their own theory on how to fix it, and perhaps one day poverty in the third world will be no more.

In Todd Shepard’s work Voices of Decolonization, the featured documents provide keen insight into the geopolitical environment of the era of decolonization (1945-1965) and the external and internal pressures on the relationships between colonial nations and the territories that they held dominion over (Shepard 10). Decolonization is the result of a combination of national self-determination and the establishment of functional international institutions composed of independent sovereign nations united towards common goals. As decolonization progressed, it intersected with points of significant sociopolitical tension between colonies and the nations that colonized them. Some of these moments of tension came in the form of progressive ideals held by international agencies which colonial nations were allied with, the revolt of colonized populations against their standing government in favor of independence, and in moral and political conflicts that arose when decolonization takes a form unexpected or undesired by the primary agents of progressive international institutions.

Europe, in the late 1800’s, was starting for a land grab in the African continent. Around 1878, most of Africa was unexplored, but by 1914, most of Africa, with the lucky exception of Liberia and Ethiopia, was carved up between European powers. There were countless motivations that spurred the European powers to carve Africa, like economical, political, and socio–cultural, and there were countless attitudes towards this expansion into Africa, some of approval and some of condemnation.
Before the American Revolution, the trends of colonial history remained rather consistent. The European superpowers continued to expand, reaping exponential benefits from the nations in which they colonized. Thomas Bender argues that the American Revolution was not just a revolution for the people of the continental United States, but was rather the starting point of a continuous global revolution that inspired social change and governmental autonomy for the colonized people. The purpose of this document is to discuss the horrible acts one may recognize as the genocide in Somalia. One may deliberate regularly on the reasons or circumstances that lead to the mistreatment and killings of a whole country; how could this happen? Why are no other countries willing to step in and give aid to the Somali people whom are suffering on a daily basis? In reality, many concerns have been addressed, whether by discussions or actions. There may be different philosophies or viewpoints as to why the genocide was conducted and not stopped. Genocide is a cruel and inhumane event and is a world problem.

The events from the years 1765 through 1776 demonstrate a growth in frustration in the colonies that eventually led to the independence of the United States. The events throughout this time continue even today to prove that loyal British citizens transformed into rebellious American patriots because they were repeatedly pushed around and betrayed by their government and through resolutions from england about taxation that led to colonial complaints and eventually rising violence in the colonies, and eventually solidarity between the colonists.
A new era was dawning on the American colonies and its mother country Britain, an era of revolution. The American colonists were subjected to many cruel acts of the British Parliament in order to benefit England itself. These British policies were forcing the Americans to rebellious feelings as their rights were constantly being violated by the British Crown. The colonies wanted to have an independent government and economy so they could create their own laws and stipulations. The British imperial policies affected the colonies economic, political, and geographic situation which intensified colonists’ resistance to British rule and intensified commitment to their republican values.
America’s history changed when the 13 colonies decided to become independent from Great Britain. Many incidents took place for America to achieve its independence from Great Britain. A revolution had to occur before Great Britain saw that its power over America was no longer accepted. The people in America suffered because of the way parliament was applying its laws and taxation over the colonies. The colonists had to make a choice to live in a society where the King could decide their future without knowing their issues, or to represent themselves as an independent colony and release their ties from Great Britain. There were three major causes of action in history that lead America toward revolution and independence against Great Britain. These were the Stamp Act, the Coercive Act, and the pamphlet Common Sense by Thomas Paine.
When the Age of Imperialism began in 1875, it effected Africa in many ways. Nowhere was the competition for colonies more intense than in Africa. Europeans went after North and South Africa splitting up the continent. Egypt and Sudan were taken over by Britain to obtain the Suez Canal. Imperialism helped to develop Africa’s economy and turned it into a continent of colonies.
Prior to the 19th century, the Europeans traded mainly for African slaves. It turns out they were not immune towards certain diseases and therefore had an increasing risk of becoming sick. For years to come this continued, but not much land was conquered. Eventually, conference between only the Europeans was held to divide up the land appropriately, and the scramble for Africa began. The driving forces behind European imperialism in Africa were expanding empires, helping natives, and natural resources.
As the 20th century approached, more and more countries grew desperate for land, resulting in an imperialistic activity known as the Scramble for Africa. The European imperialists were motivated by three main factors; economic, political, and social. These factors made countries compete for power and eventually led to the scramble for African territory. Although economic expansion at times was a positive outcome of European imperialism in Africa, these positive effects are outweighed by negative outcomes such as loss of culture and independence.
Imperialism is the domination by one country of political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region and occurred during the 1800’s in Africa. Imperialism in Africa was caused by four factors in Europe: economy, politics/military, humanitarian/religion, and Social Darwinism (Ellis). The Industrial Revolution in Europe caused the need for oversea expansion because the manufacturers needed things like: rubber, petroleum, and palm oil all of which Africa had. Europe moving into Africa was also caused by nationalism, when France went into Africa so did Britain (Ellis). The difference between France and Britain was the way of rule they used. There are four different methods of imperialism: direct, indirect, protectorate, and sphere of influence. The most popular were direct and indirect. The French used direct, they sent officials and soldiers from France to administer their colonies and their purpose was to inflict French culture on their colonies and make them into French provinces (Ellis). The British, however, used indirect, they used chiefs to oversee their colonies and encouraged the children in the colonies to get education in Britain. The British “Westernized” their colonies and only used military force when threatened (Ellis).
Centuries ago when exploration was more popular and the world seemed unknown, many countries ventured out, discovering Somalia. Somalia became known for its natural ports, which were promised for trading exotic goods. During the 19th century, Europe found a way to use Africa for its own growth and power. Using Africa for their resources, the Europeans colonized Africa without a second thought. European imperialism in Africa had a negative impact because of social disarray, cultural loss, and death it caused. As the Europeans started to invade Africa and split up the land, they paid no attention to the already existing natural boundaries. Over time, villages with different cultures had set these boundaries.
